Indian Park or Jarre Canyon Cemetery, Sedalia, Douglas County, Colorado Walked and transcribed by: Alicia Poreda jace_p@msn.com May 30, 2001 The Jarre Canyon Cemetery is located on Jarre Canyon Road (Colo. 67) 0.5 miles past the Giddy Up Go store. On North side, 100 yards North of Indian Park School. (Sec 2, R69W, T8S – NE1/4, SW1/4) In this area are the graves of the Brown children. Davis Dec. 23, 1927 May 13,1984 Hannah Smith born June 22, 1843 in Yorkshire, England, left Liverpool at the age of 14 and was on board the ship for three weeks. William Smith freighted merchandise from St. Joseph, Missouri to Idaho Springs, Colorado by ox team with the trip taking six months. William and Hannah were married in St. Joseph, Missouri and came to Colorado in 1883 and went into the sawmill business. They had six children: Ollie & Lottie- they married Will and Frank Kendall and lived in the Castle Rock area. They were in the lumber business. William (boot) Smith – buried in Ft. Collins, Colorado Leonard Smith – buried in Briggdale, Colorado Charley Smith – buried in Jarre Canyon near an old farm in a valley about one mile before the Indian Park schoolhouse. Elmer Smith – died in California. William and Hannah Smith owned land on both sides of the road. William donated one acre of land for the schoolhouse. When William Smith died in the winter months the snow was too deep to take his body to town so his wife, Hannah had him buried behind the schoolhouse and subsequently deeded the land to School District No. 7 for a cemetery. In September 1963, Claude Smith (grandson of William and Hannah) and Helen Pierce (great- granddaughter of William and Hannah) built the fence around the cemetery. Helen Pierce gathered rocks and made the “rock markers” from information supplied by Claude Smith. Claude Smith’s ashes were laid in the cemetery in 1977. Hannah Smith died May 3, 1911 in Briggsdale, Colorado and is buried in Bear Creek Cemetery near Sedalia, Colorado. Leonard Smith, son of William and Hannah Smith, married Margaret Kirby. Their children were: Grace, Harry, Bessie, Lynn, Frank, Claude, Rose Smith Pine(buried in Broomfield, Colorado), Sylvia Smith Pierce(buried in Oak Creek, Colorado). Leonard Smith later married Etta Benton and moved to Briggsdale, Colorado in 1910. He died there in 1940. Mary C.
