WRITE, Dan -----obit YOUNG, Harry ZALAR, Tony May 26, 1895 - Jan 29, 1948 Colo., PFC, Sig. Corps., WWI ZEINS, C.F. A Story related byTheodore "Bud" Beck to his brother Buster: "Funny you should mention Tony Zalar. I vividly remember his funeral because there was a hell of a lot of snow so the coffin was on one sled and the dignitaries were on another. The remainder of the crowd, including the American Legion color guard, of which I was a member, was traveling on foot behind the sleds. About half way between the school and the big curve there was a stop to rest the horses. Mickey Walsh was in charge of the color guard and brought us to a halt. Then the following took place: Mickey, in what for him was a low voice, "Who's got the jug?" Complete silence ensued. Mickey again, in a somewhat louder voice, "Who's got the jug?" Again there was complete silence. Mickey again, in a very loud voice, "By Gawd there had better be a jug or Tony won't go!" There was apparently a jug or so somewhere because Tony was buried up on the hill and at least one of the pall bearers slid into the grave before the coffin got there. All in all it was a delightful party. Probably more or less typical for a Red Cliff funeral of those days." "More about, I think, the Tony Zalar funeral. It seems that eventually the creepy little undertaker from Eagle, I've forgotten his name, seriously overtrained (got drunk) and was hauled home in his own hearse. It is probably just as well that I have also forgot just who it was that took him home although it must have been some one from down that way. As a matter of practically no interest the hearse was a Studebaker that had been owned by Oscar Meyer. It is quite likely that just the remaining few of us are the only ones who have ever seen a Studebaker hearse, I know that is the only one I ever saw."
