He served with distinction in Company B of the 20th Indiana Volunteer Infantry 1861-1864. He was diability discharged following the Battle of Spottsylvania Court House. Although Oscar only had one useable arm, he was a teamster and drove ore wagons. He died 13 May 1895, when traveling by horse and buggy over Battle Mountain on his way to Red Cliff, Colorado. He fell about 400 feet straight down to the railroad tracks below. Oscar was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).
