First, there is a newspaper clipping in this booklet about The Quill. The paper is undated but I would guess it was from the Colorado Springs Gazette around 1931, and was in the Society Section. Edited by Ellen O.Connor Quill Club Dedicates Year Book to Andy Adams The dedication of the annual year book of the Quill club, to Andy ADAMS, renowned write of western fiction, was made by Mrs. Florence MARSHALL STOTE at the club’s banquet held at the Patty Jewett Golf Club last night. Preceding the banquet, officers of the club received members and guests on the veranda of the clubhouse. Dinner was served in the dining room, where tables were attractively decorated with Neil roses and garden flowers. Following dinner, the program of the evening was held in the club lounge. Hugo F. SCOTT made the address of welcome, which was followed by the dedication of the yearbook. Robert W. FLING awarded the annual contest prizes. This was followed by piano solos by Hugo SCOTT, announcement of awards in the Quill club publishing contest, and an auction sale conducted by Lieut. George CAVANAUGH. Present at the banquet were: Mr. and Mrs. W.H.R. STOTE, Mrs. F.A.BISSELL, Mrs. Joseph W. SLAVICK, Mr. and Mrs. Curt GOERKE, Mrs. Alice SPENCER, Mr. Brune KLINGER, Mrs. E.S. SCOTT, Lieut. George CAVANAUGH. Now for the booklet and some of it’s contents PROLOGUE This volume, which includes a sketch of the Quill Club history, and the winning stories and poems of the Annual Short Story and Poetry Contest for 1931. is published, not as a public presentation of outstanding contemporary literary achievement, but as a nucleus for the preservation of writing by the Club members. We trust that beginning with this primal number, we shall become increasingly interested and determined to build our present literary value as writers, recording in subsequent editions pieces that will overshadow in merit these first attempts, and a contrast of which against these bits will bring inspiration. Today’s work is recorded form an ambition to work, and a courage to carry on. Tomorrow’s results we trust will be an atonement for these earlier commitments; a blossoming into fine flower of our present dreamings. --N.M.H. Next Page This volume, the first yearbook of the Quill Club of Colorado Springs, is dedicated to one who stands first in the field of western fiction--- ANDY ADAMS Whose genial disposition, whose stern but sincere admonitions, whose sponsorship of continuous contest among our membership, have treaded a line of definite progress for our Club. [there is a picture of Andy Adams] HISTORICAL ALLUSIONS February 13, 1928, a group of writers of the Pikes Peak Region interested themselves in the organization of a club to the advantage that mutual benefit might be gained from close association, interchange of ideas, and fellowship of those roundabout and those who might come from afar. The collective best opinion of the group was crystallized into established conventions and rules of procedure. Officers were elected, and a constitution and bylaws were adopted. It was voted that regular meeting be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. A membership fee of $5.00 was approved for the first year, with a fixed fee of $2.00 for subsequent years, the latter fee being deemed adequate for the Club’s needs. Sunday, following the organization meeting the Club members were host to all non-member writers resident or visiting within the region. Seventy- seven guests accepted this hospitality. It is redundant to state that all meetings of the club, whether routine or social, have been thoroly enjoyed, whether those attending were writing for literary exercise or for pecuniary advantage. April 17, 1928, the Club members and wives or husbands, respectively, were very graciously entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank WADELL in Broadmoor. November 26, 1928, the members and guests enjoyed a luncheon at the Elks Club. Sanford JARRELL related a most interesting account of experiences in this campaign tour with Vice President CURTIS and party. Andy ADAMS, John J. LIPSEY, A. Vaughan ELSTON, and Archie MUSICK gave interesting highlights of their literary experiences, augmenting with predictions of future possibilities for the Club. Nor do we now tread upon a delicate matter when we touch upon the subject of results, for across the pages of the Quill Club’s history have walked many who are enjoying development consistently and definitely allied with determined effort. On November 12, 1929 when Hamlin GARLAND appeared before the Winter Night Club, President Wynne WADELL, Vice President A. Vaughan ELSTON, and Secretary N. Mark HANNA were invited, as representatives of the Quill Club to hear Mr. GARLAND. April 9, 1929, Miss Grace CASEY invited the members of the Quill Club to Dixieland, to hear the reading of Andy ADAMS’S four-act play, Graybeal’s Guest. Members from the Drama League of Colorado Springs, Mrs. Faye Lilly HODGES, Miss Bernice BAYLESS, and Messes. Gerowe SIMMONS and John PERKINS reading the manuscript. This was a delightful event, and members of the Drama League as well as those of the Quill Club shared the pleasure. December 19, 1929, Mrs. Rose MANSFIELD PIKE entertained the members of the Club at a jolly Christmas party at her home. At this time announcements of the annual contest awards for 1929 were made, Maud MATTOX KEITHLEY being awarded first place, with Mabel S. BROWN and R. MANSFIELD PIKE tying for second place. In the fall of 1929, the University of Colorado offered a ten-weeks course in short-story writing, under the instruction of Anne M. HALLADAY, which was highly attended by Quill members. In the fall of 1930, under the auspices of the University of Colorado, Maude Y. McNEAL presented a ten-weeks classes in writing was presented beginning March 2, 1931, under the instruction of Anne M. HALLADAY. The Club members are highly appreciative for the advantages offered by these courses. The latter was perhaps the most enjoyably informal of the series, closing with a luncheon in honor of Mrs. HALLADAY, at the home of and under the charming hospitality of Mrs. A.R. BUCKEY. The 1930 contest brought first awards to Andy ADAMS and Hugo F. SCOTT. During the summer of 1930, under the chairmanship of Emory VON DIEL DAVIS, discussion and criticism meetings were held. Much constructive work was accomplished from this mutually advantageous cooperation, and it is hoped that similar groups may meet each summer during the Club vacation period. The most interesting of the annual contests was that for the year 1931. Forty-two manuscripts were entered in the contest. As a result, due credit for which idea goes to Hugo F. SCOTT, this first Yearbook has been issued, containing the pieces entered in the contest. This volume I we trust will be incentive for a greater spirit of competition among our members, as we,, as a brief history of events and accomplishment within the club. Judges of the contest were Christine PARMENTER, Colorado Springs, author of several books and a regular contributor to leading magazines; Henry C. DILLER, president of the Society of Arts and Letter of Philadelphia; Washington VAN DUSEN, vice president of the Poetry society of London, member of the London Quill Club and formerly president of the Browning Club of Philadelphia. This edition, of necessity, must be brief in that it must touch upon activities covering a period of the first three years of the club’s existence. Hence we much beg to be allowed to escape with remarks of non- committal subterfuge, omitting bits that might be or more or less interest to the various individual members of the Club. In subsequent volumes, however, we shall hope to review with a regard but for the current year’s activities, consequentially, at greater length, with a recording of articles or stories from members who do not have entries in this book. HUGH F. SCOTT Whose loyalty to the plan and purpose of The Quill Club is genuine. To him must go full credit for the inauguration of A Yearbook as a permanent feature of our Club program.
