The Colorado Springs Gazette Newspaper Fresh*Ink Section Posted by Jay Smith Fresh*Ink Contributor on November 15, 2010 at 8:30am. http://www.csfreshink.com/profiles/blogs/calling-all-palmer-hs-alumni "Calling All Palmer H.S. Alumni... For all of you who went to either Colorado Springs High School or Palmer High School, this is a call to arms, if you will. There have been in excess of 37,700 graduates from our school since it opened in 1879. How many of you are members of the CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association? How many of you are second, third (or even GREATER) generation Terrors? In any case, we want to hear from you and join us as members! Our website is: http://www.cshs-palmer-alumni.org You didn’t know you even had an Alumni Association? Well, sit back and take heed: The Alumni Association was started in 1984. (where were you at that time?) You remember the term “Palmer Pride”? That was the idea of Roberta Wilson, who was the first Association President. Like all such organizations, the objective is to preserve the history and traditions of the school and to help promote excellence in education. The Association is involved in many aspects in the life of the school. Not only is there the moral support at games and concerts (which is fun for us, too), but there is the financial support that the Association gives for scholarships and funds to help out in other places around the school, as well: beautification projects, tower clock maintenance, requests for plaques and assistance for trips, are but a few requests received. And then, there is the Hall of Fame. There are 90 some Terror graduates who have been inducted into this. On the first floor at Palmer, there are pictures of those who have been inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame. More pictures are on the second floor, too. Former students, perhaps even classmates of yours; who have done noticeable things in their lives, ultimately or for awhile, which bears being noticed –- forever. Will you be there someday? Not all of us are destined for greatness, but for those who are, into the Hall of Fame you’ll go, the weekend of Homecoming. Starting November first, the Alumni Historical Room on the third floor will be available for visits by appointment only. This room holds many more items than just old mementos, uniforms, pictures and yearbooks. It is a hallowed place, if you will; where those who partook of the school, are able to relive their past. If research is your quest, then there are plenty of sources to be had… Contact for an appointment, can be made through the website. Emails can be sent asking questions, also through the website. Or, they could be offering suggestions, or a notification of an upcoming reunion, etc. And please remember this: all that is done by the Alumni Association is done by volunteers! That’s right, ordinary (Terrors are ordinary?) people who give of their time. Most of them are in their 70’s. There are no paychecks, yet some work so tirelessly to get an event organized, you’d swear they were a dedicated employee of a large corporation. Well, dedicated, anyway. Like any organization, all members are aging. Enough aging of the members without new ones who are active and the Association ceases to exist. Looking at a recent membership list, 1/5 of the members graduated after 1960… Not everyone has to be on a committee or assigned to a project. You can “help out” on different things, as your time allows you. I help out on 5-7 things and I know that there is plenty of room for more folks! There’s also the newsletter or the Alumni Lever, when you join, providing information, like the website does, on upcoming events like the next monthly breakfast. It is mailed out every 2 months. You receive this with your membership, which is still only $5.00 per year. Membership applications can be downloaded off of our website or they can be requested by mail at: CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association, P.O. Box 2230, Colorado Springs, CO 80901-2230 So, where are you and what are you waiting for?"
