Grand Dragon, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Realm of Colorado

   The Rev. Fred G. Arnold, pastor of the First Baptist church of Canon City and
president of the board of directors of the Fremont County Publishing Company,
publishers of the Daily American and Kolorado Klan Kourier, was born at Stella,
Nebraska, March 25, 1886, son of William Christian and Eliza Adelaide (Scott)
Arnold, the former born in Marion, Ohio, and the latter in Muncie, Indiana.  He
was graduated from the Humboldt, Nebraska, high school in 1905.  He took up the
study of pharmacy and in 1907 became a registered pharmacist in Nebraska; was
for some time manager of a drug store and then was made pharmacist and steward
for the Nebraska State Soldiers and Sailors Home.  Meanwhile he was carrying on
theological studies; in 1912 was graduated from the Rochester (New York)
Theological Seminary; was ordained to the ministry of the Baptist church and
began his service as a clergyman in Ohio, serving his his denomination at Urband
and Marysville, Ohio.  He has been a resident of Colorado since 1918.  In 1920
he was given a life teacher’s certificate for eminent service as school
superintendent in Colorado, and in 1922 Oskaloosa College conferred upon him the
degree of Doctor of Philosophy, he having received his Master degree from that
institution in 1917.  During the period 1922-1925, Dr. Arnold served as chaplain
of the Colorado state penitentiary where his work became widely known and his
services highly commended by national prison experts.  In 1920 he was installed
as pastor of the First Baptist church of Canon City and so continues.  In 1922
he was the vice president of the Colorado State Baptist Convention.  He has been
the grand dragon of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in the state of Colorado
since November, 1925, and is recognized as one of the national leaders of the
Klan. For three years he rendered military service as member of Howitzer
Company6 of the One Hundred and Fifty-seventy Infantry.  He is affiliated wit
the Masons, the Odd Fellows, and the Woodmen of the World; is a member of the
Colorado State Historical Society, the Society of Applied Psychology, The
National Geographic Society, the American Nature Association, and the American
Anthropological Society.
   On February 6, 1916, at Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dr. Arnold married Anna
Ellena Kuper, and they have five children:  Helen Myrtle, Garfield Kuper,
Wenonah Adelaide, Ruth Eloise; and Gladys Elaine.
