In the late 1800's and early 1900, the government land was opened to homesteading, and a great influx of people came into the area to achieve land and a home for the price of 5 years of occupancy and improvements. The name of the town has traditionally been explained by the fact that an itinerant prospector named Henry (Gold Tom) Thomas thought that the peak to the west, as viewed through the canyon looked a great deal like the Cotopaxi Peak in Ecuador, where he had also prospected for gold. The other thought on the subject, the Indian words for "Shining Pile" were similar to Cotopaxi, and therefore because of the magnificent Sangre De Cristo Range nearby, and the mica in the quartz rocks extant within the environs of the town, the reason for the name. In the Canon City and Fremont County Directory for 1916, Cotopaxi is listed as having a population of 100, and this is a low figure considering the number of people who were living outside the town environs on homesteads The Cotopaxi Cemetery is on land, which belonged to Emanuel H. Saltiel in 1880. The first burials were Russian Jews in 1882 who had come to colonize the area under the auspices of Mr. Saltiel, and (unbeknownst to them) work in his mine named the Cotopaxi Lode and the Enterprise Mine. The cemetery is located in Section 31, Township 48N, Range 12E NMPM. It can be reached by turning onto County Road 12 from U.S. Highway 50, traveling North from Cotopaxi approximately 1/2 mile, past the Cotopaxi School, and upon reaching the football field/track, turn left on a one lane gravel road for approximately 1/4 mile. The cemetery is completely enclosed with chainlink/hog wire fencing, and a gate which is not locked with the words, "Cotopaxi Cemetery, Est. 1882". There is a small, separate gravesite on a small hill directly north of the main cemetery, which was once enclosed with a picket fence. There are three known graves in this dilapidated enclosure, only one of which has a stone marker (which has been vandalized). The cemetery is maintained by community effort, 4-H Clubs clean the area once a year prior to Memorial Day, and a volunteer committee of community members named the Cotopaxi Cemetery Board administer the burial places, and generally caretaker the graves and area. The cemetery is also periodically attended by persons doing "community service" from the courts, and therefore there is considerable activity to keep it tidy. There is no maintained lawn, or flowers within the fence, however many graves are attended by individuals that have planted iris and other perennials around family plots. There are 214 burials in the cemetery with at least 8 unknown persons. The Cotopaxi School is to the East of the cemetery, and there is a road around the perimeter, which is accessed by the teachers who park near their classrooms. The road also accesses the Cotopaxi Mine to the Northwest. There is parking space outside the fence near the gate, although a road goes through the center of the area. The listing of burials is in sections "A" Above the road and "B" Below the road. The numbers were given to the gravesites, starting with #1 in the first row Below the road and continued in numerical order to the end of Row 7, Above the road. There are many additional gravesites, which will be numbered differently because they are outside the numbering system that was done in 1980's. =================================================== Contributed for use by the USGenWeb Archive Project (http://www.usgenweb.org) and by the COGenWeb Archive Project USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organization or persons.
