Part 1 Hillside (San Isabel View) Cemetery, Hillside, Fremont County, Colorado http://files.usgwarchives.net/co/fremont/cemeteries/sanisab1.txt Donated by Carol McNew This listing is sized to be printed as "landscape" on 81/2x11 paper. See the USGenWeb Copyright notice at the end of the file. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Page No. 1 ALPHABETICAL LIST OF GRAVESTONES Date: 03/27/01 SAN ISABEL VIEW HISTORICAL CEMETERY #: FN005 HILLSIDE, CO Location: 100 ft east of COUNTY ROAD , STATE HIGHWAY 69 at TEL pole # 0 NOTE: San Isabel View Cemetery was always known as Hillside Cemetery until recently when another cemetery in Colorado named "Hillside" was considered the original. The beautiful metal entrance gate is accessed from a county road off of State Highway 69 between Texas Creek and Westcliffe. The old section of the cemetery is not laid out in concise rows, so the reading was done from West to East, Row 1 starting at the NorthWest end of the cemetery, ending with Row 10. The cemetery is natural terrain, with many pinon trees and yucca plants in amongst the graves. There have been many lilac bushes planted over the years and they have grown into dense tangles of brush at many gravesites. The new section of the cemetery is gridded and large family plots have been marked out. The Sextons have a good grid map of this part of the cemetery and there is a great deal more open space. There are numerous lilac bushes throughout the old section, which obscure many stones, and probably some graves. There are pinon trees and other plants which have grown into the gravesites, with some stones being dislodged from their bases. There are Veterans in the cemetery from Civil War to Viet Nam. The oldest grave is thought to be Legget (or Diggit) with no other identification). There is no date on the small metal tag of galvanized tin, which has been stamped with the information about the name and "oldest". The grave is large field stones built up to a height of 2 feet on the sides and 2 1/2 feet on the West end. Bushes and trees surround the grave. The land was homesteaded originally by Joseph Patton, or Ira King. The Caughman family acquired the property, and donated the parcel for the cemetery to the community. They also were caretakers for many years, and I suspect they were the ones who marked the graves with the galvanized pieces of metal stamped with the names or information. The cemetery was read in March, 2001 by Carol McNew, with help from the National Honor Society students of Cotopaxi High School: Christina Aiello, Jeremiah Brodeur, Nicole Brown, Amber Butcher, Leslie Callies, Jerad Degenhart, Amber Disney, Tyrell Eggleston, Ashley Hixon, Trent McNew, Landon Reed, Whitney Strobel and their teacher/sponsor Linda Kramer. Mr. and Mrs. Rod Carpenter, sextons, were present to help with questions and directions on the new part of the cemetery. There are no more burials in the older section of the cemetery.
