Canon City

    The attractions of this city are growing rapidly through the energy
    of its people, who spare neither money nor time in making the most of
    the manifold elements of wealth surrounding them, which are briefly
    enumerated herein. The material as well as the scenic and climatic
    advantages of Fremont county, of which Canon City is the county seat,
    place it in the front rank. Besides the precious and other minerals,
    its granites and other building stones gypsum and alabaster, fire and
    brick clays, lime, silica, Portland cement, Florence oil basin, Canon
    City coal fields. Canon City has water power of one hundred and
    thirty-five foot fall, only ten feet of which is used by Canon City
    Flour Mills. Decreed water rights of the irrigation ditches date back
    to 1863-4. Canon and South Canon have entered on a lively era of civic
    improvement, the former having nearly forty miles of cement sidewalks,
    and are making commendable progress in laying out and beautifying three
    parks and keeping tidy their beautiful streets. A new water works system
    has just been completed at a cost of $400,000.00.

    Canon City, South and East Canon, Lincoln Park and other suburban districts
    now number ten thousand population, with thirteen church edifices, three of
    which have pipe organs. Two high and eight graded schools. No saloons.

    The two large fire and pressed brick plants ship extensively to all points
    west and south. The plant of the Round Crest Canning Company have immense
    brick buildings equipped with the most approved machinery. Their product
    ranks equal to the best in the United States, the markets of which they are
    rapidly capturing. The U. 3. Smelting Co. and Empire Zinc Co. plants are
    located here, also an extensive cement building block and tile works and ice
    and cold storage plants. The Carnegie library is a joy to everybody. The
    Mount St. Scholastica Academy for girls has very commodious and fine brick
    buildings and ranks among the best in the state. A parish school for boys
    has just benn completed. Canon City's substantial banking institutions carry
    over one and one-fourth million dollars deposits. The railorad service here
    by the Denver & Rio Grande, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe and the Canon City &
    Cripple Creek railways is first class. The D & R. G. R. R. has built a fine
    new depot at a cost of $35,000. Nearly one million dollars received from the
    fruit crop annually. Have one daily and three weekly newspapers.
