Colorado death 1935 Feb 15 Rainbow Park, Fremont Co., Colorado Obituary notice: Florence Citizen, Feb 16, 1935, p. 1 JOHN MAULLER JR. KILLED, THREE ARE INJURED IN WRECK CAR CRASHES INTO STALLED TRUCK ON THIRD STREET AT DUSK FRIDAY EVENING Grim tragedy struck the John Mauller family last night when John Mauller Jr., 17, was almost instantly killed while returning home from an errand for his mother. Mauller was killed when his car struck a stalled truck belonging to Tony Moschetti in front of the Moschetti home on East Third street in Rainbow Park at 6:30 at Friday evening. John Griffin, 12, who was riding with Mauller when the accident happened is in serious condition at Graves Hospital in Canon City, Tony Moschetti, 55 is also in the hospital badly injured, while Mrs. Tony Moschetti is recovering at home from severe scalp lacerations. The accident happened when Mauller was returning home from a trip to Rainbow Park to buy eggs for his mother. He was driving along Third street toward Florence, and in the dusk, as his car came over a rise in the road, failed to see the stalled truck until too late to avoid striking it. Moschetti was attempting to crank the truck when it was struck, and Mrs. Moschetti was seated in the cab of the truck. The impact of the collision knocked the truck forward crushing Moschetti to the ground, and knocking Mrs. Moschetti down. The two boys in the car were crushed and torn by the terrific impact. Mauller apparently receiving a broken neck and young Griffith a broken foot and head injuries. Moschetti received a broken pelvic bone and a broken hip. Ambulances were summoned from Florence and the injured were brot into town for medical aid. Little John Griffith, unconscious, was first taken to his home, but was later removed to Graves hospital. Moschetti was rushed directly to Graves hospital in Canon City. Mrs. Moschetti was taken to her home and a physician summoned to care for her. The body of John Mauller, who was dead when doctors and ambulances arrived, was taken to a local mortuary. Coroner C.H. Graves, Sr., of Canon City investigated the accident, and ordered an inquest, which will be held at the Holt chapel at 3:30 or 4 o'clock this afternoon. The truck was badly damaged and the Mauller roadster was completely demolished by the force of the collision. John Mauller, Sr., operates the Sinclair Filling Station on East Main street, and was formerly cashier of the Security National Bank of Florence. Moschetti is a well known and successful truck gardener. All of the principals in the tragic accident are well known here, and the entire community was shocked and saddened by the tragedy. John Mauller Jr., had been working with his father at the filling station after school hours, and had a wide acquaintance thru the community. Reports from Graves hospital early this afternoon indicate that both of the injured are better and will recover. Little John Griffith is still in a dazed condition, but has partially regained consciousness. He has not as yet been told of his friend's death. He is suffering from a broken right ankle, face lacerations, and a possible slight brain concussion, Moschetti is suffering from a broken pelvic bone, a broken hip and cuts and bruises about the face. He too is better this afternoon, and while he will be bedfast for several months as a result of the accident, attending doctors do not regard his condition as critical. The dead boy, John Raymond Mauller Jr., was born in Florence on March 11, 1918 and had lived here all his life. Several years ago he was an active member leader in the local troop of Boy Scouts. He was a student at Florence High School, and was employed after school hours and on Saturday at his father's filling station. Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Mauller, Sr., he is survived by four sisters Dora Lee, Louise, Mildred and Ruby Mae. Funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian Church at two o'clock Monday afternoon with Rev. James R. Burchfield officiating. Burial will be in Union Highland cemetery.
