Pioneer Cemetery, Glenwood Springs, Garfield County, Colorado Also known as Linwood Cemetery and Hill Cemetery Large memorial stone: "TO THE MEMORY OF ALL WHO SLEEP HERE INGOD'S ACRE G. L. AND L. C. 1923" Linwood Cemetery. Copied by Donna L. Drummond and Ann Link. Compiled by and made available to The USGenWeb Archives by Donna L. Drummond. The Glenwood Cemetery on the hill has had several names since it's beginnings. J. I. Burdge called it Hill Cemetery and Glenwood Cemetery. Lena M. Urquhart called it Linwood Cemetery in her book, "Glenwood Springs: Spa in the Mountains." At one time it was known as Jasper Mountain, named for Jasper Ward who is buried there. The infamous Doc John Holliday is buried in the cemetery, and most tourists passing through think of it a Doc Holliday's Cemetery. Regardless of the name, many of the old timers, the pioneers of the Glenwood Springs area, are buried in the cemetery and burials were still taking place as late as 1967. The earliest inscription found was that of Cordelia Mary Jones, born January 17, 1875 and died August 27, 1875. The cemetery was granted to the City of Glenwood Springs; its previous owner had been Jacob "Jakie" Schwarz. He had owned the first mortuary in Glenwood Springs and no doubt buried most of the first occupants of the cemetery. The Location of the cemetery is indicative of the early pioneers of Colorado. They placed their cemetery on a hill overlooking the town that they loved and the scenic beauty of the country side for miles around. The legal description of the location: Sec. 15, twp 6s, Range 89w, Garfield county map 5. Starting at the crest of the mountain and working towards the back of the cemetery, we catalogued the inscriptions of the stones still standing and legible. Last Sunday morning just as the Church bells were sounding their Easter chimes, Mrs. Naomi L. Graham gently and without suffering breathed the last and was no more. Mrs. Graham had been a resident of Glenwood Springs for 25 years coming here when the town was still very young from Leadville where she had gone through the mining excitement of that new camp. Though quiet and unassuming she was one of the choice spirits of the community in which she lived, her special trait being her love and kindness toward children and animals and her fondness of flowers. With her husband Newton Graham she has lived a very quiet life and notwithstanding much pain and suffering she has been called to endure she bore it all in a brae uncomplaining manner. Mr. And Mrs. Graham were never blessed with children of their own but they have reared or partly reared several who regarded them with as tender affection as they would have their own parents, one of these fostered children educated and trained by them is now a missionary I a foreign land. Mrs. Graham was 61 and while in California several years ago suffered a fractured hip and has been an invalid due to that and heart trouble. Services in the Methodist Church were officiated by Rev. George F. Klefa. Farnum Mortuary was in charge and interment in the Glenwood or Hill Cemetery. GRAHAM, Newton July 8, 1924 Glenwood Cemetery, Farnum. HAMILTON, Alice Laws (Mrs. R. W. Sept. 12, 1912 Sept. 12, 1912, Saturday, F. Hervey A. Lyle passes hence. Pioneer builder and booster is suddenly called by death in the midst of a useful career. Glenwood honors his memory. Glenwood suffered a severe loss in the passing of F. H. Lyle whose death occurred at the Glenwood Sanitarium at 7:50 last Monday evening, Sept. 9, following an operation for appendicitis the previous Saturday morning. While it was known at least by a number of friends that Mr. Lyle had not enjoyed his former good health since he suffered an attack of pneumonia about three years ago, his sudden illness and the necessity of an operation came as a surprise to his friends while the majority of the people were simply crushed at the news of his death as they felt that the town had had lost one of its best friends and supporters and the people discussed the loss which the town and community have sustained. There were only words of praise for Mr. Lyle and his aggressive ambition to make and keep Glenwood the most beautiful spot in Colorado. Mr. Lyle's death came so soon after the beginning of his illness that the news came as a positive shock to the people who could scarcely believe the report of his demise. Only on Wednesday of last week had he refereed the polo match on the local grounds between the Denver Country Club and the local team. At the Close of the game he participated in the hurdle races. Thursday he was riding about town and entertaining the visiting players and that evening in the dance given in the honor of the guests of the local team. It was while thus making matters pleasant for the visitors that he was attached with severe pains and forced to consult Dr. Schmitz who temporarily relieved him of pain. Friday, upon the advise of his physician he remained in his room suffering considerable pain, and Saturday morning the doctors having by that time made certain as to the cause of the trouble, an operation was performed by Drs. Schmitz, Stewart and Clark. The condition at this time was found to be very serious, Sunday morning another operation was performed by Dr. Schmitz and this proved a severe shock to the patient. Two nurses and his faithful surgeon and friend remained constantly at the bedside of the patient throughout the illness and every possible attention was given him, but apparently to no purpose. He remained conscious almost to the very last and less than 30 minutes before the end chatted with his friends Elmer Lucus, C. C. Parks, E. Stephen and Drs. Schmitz and Clar. Mr. Lyle was born 52 years ago near Londonderry, Ireland where one brother and two sisters survive and an aunt who has written him a letter weekly even though she is 82. Mr. Lyle was very uncommunicative as far as his personal life was concerned and on this account he was misunderstood and underestimated by many people. But those who knew him best had very high regards for him. It is a high compliment to the memory of the man that he was most honored by those to whom he was the closest. To them his character unfolded itself and they loved him for what they knew him to be. Mr. Lyle came to Glenwood Springs 26 years ago when it was a very small and new village. He was enamored by the beauty of its natural surroundings and decided to make it his home. He first engaged in the coal business with his brother Frank, and later in a sawmill. Early in his residence here he became closely interested with the Devereuxs and others in the Glenwood Hot Springs and Hotel Company and the Glenwood Light and water Company. He was general manager of both companies at the time of his death. He took an active part with W. B. Devereux in the building of the Hotel Colorado in 1891 - 1893 and in many of the enterprises in which he was interested when funds were necessary, Mr. Lyle could always appeal to his friends in New York or England and the money would be forth coming upon his representations and his personal enthusiasm and financial standing coupled with his unbounded faith in Glenwood Springs that the praises of the town as a resort have been sung around the world. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church with Bishop Brewster and Rev. J. W. Hard officiating. At the request of Mr. Lyle made some time ago interment was in the Glenwood Hill Cemetery by the side of his friend Alex Thomson who preceded him to the unknown land but a little over a year ago. Active pall bearers were: George Ferris, Fred Kaiser, Nick Bellm, Fred Korn, Frank Hess, C. W. Cox, and Nick Schauster, all employees of the Glenwood Light and Water Company and the Glenwood Hot Springs and Hotel, chosen in reference to their length of service under Mr. Lyles personal management. Honorary pall bearers were: C. C. Parks, W. H. Richardson, E. E. Lucas, Dr. E. F. J. Schmitz, J. H. Fester, Louis Swartz, H. K. Devereux, William G. Devereux, e. Stephens and C. A. Arthur. Mr. Lyle's two favorite horses were led saddled and bridled in the funeral procession and a large number of employees showed their respect for their former employer by marching in a body to the grave. The business houses of Glenwood were closed from 2 pm to 4 pm Wednesday afternoon and the city schools were dismissed at 2 pm. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Glenwood and the profusion of floral offerings were heaped upon the grave indicating the high regard in which Mr. Lyle was held by the people.
