The deceased was seventy years old; born at Pennsylvania in 1834. During the war he enlisted in the army. He was brought up from childhood under the Christian influences and the church of God. While very young he enlisted under the banner of the Cross in the Presbyterian Church. For years he lived on a farm in Rock Island county, Illinois, from there he moved to Salina, Kansas and joined the Methodist Church. He then moved to Arkansas where his health began to fail, and his doctor advised him to come to Colorado, which he did, coming to New Castle. Later on he and his wife went out to Williams' ranch on Garfield creek. He left a wife, five sons and two daughters--two sons at Arizona, two sons at California, son and daughter at Iowa and a daughter, Miss Adams at New Castle to mourn his loss. Mr. Adams told his wife the day before he died that his hope in Christ was blessed and to die would be his eternal gain, and for her to tell the children to put all their faith in the Lord. His funeral took place Friday afternoon from the Congregational church, where Rev. J. Morlias Richard preached form the text Hebr 9-17 verse to a large congregation. The coffin was decorated with many beautiful wreathes and flowers. The body was taken to the cemetery and buried in the old soldiers' lot. Pastor Richards conducted the service at the grave. The God of the dead will comfort the family and relatives in their sad bereavement. CARD OF THANKS We desire to thank the many kind friends of Garfield creek and New Castle, for the cheerful assistance they rendered us in the illness and death of our beloved husband and father. Mrs. Emma Adams Miss Hattie Adams Additional Comments: He is buried in Highland Cemetery in Old Soldiers section. It is a very peaceful and beautiful setting. Gravestone simply says: J N ADAMS CO. James Nesbit Adams was born Feb. 26, 1834 in Indiana County Pennsylvania, son of Samuel and Nancy Nesbit Adams. His widow, Emma C. Adams later married Norval W. Kelly on March 25, 1912 at Silt in Garfield County; he died on Jan. 13, 1915 and is also buried in Highland Cemetery. James N. Adams was surrounded by children his whole life. He had 4 siblings (Jane, William, Elizabeth, & Samuel). With his first wife, Rebecca Bothell (1834-1877), he had 5 sons and 1 daughter (Ed, George, James, Milt, Lorenzo, and Susie Adams). Rebecca died of appendicitis when her daughter was 20 months old. His second wife, Emma Davis Abbott (1849-1928), was a widow with one son from a previous marriage (Frederick Abbott 1884-1894), and together Emma and James N. had a son and daughter (Arthur and Hattie Adams). Arthur died tragically when his foot caught in the stirrup while riding a pony on the prairie in Kansas and was dragged to his death; and Arthur's sister Hattie died of typhoid fever at age 18. His daughter, Susie Adams Schuessler, said her step-mother Emma was very kind and loving, and her father would not speak of his experiences in the Civil War because he saw such terrible things.
