FLEMING CALLED Well Known Teacher Succumbs to Attack of Typhoid Fever It is with feelings of deepest regret that the Telegram is called upon to chronicle the death of Mrs. O. B. Fleming, well known to almost everyone in Rifle, which occurred in Grand Valley last Sunday. The news of this etimable lady's death came as a greater shock to a majority of our people owing to the fact that they were generally unaware of her illness. She had not been in her usual health for some time, and on Monday of last week her illness developed into typhoid-pneumonia, and notwithstanding every effort was put forth by careful nursing and medical attention to check the progress of this dreaded enemy, the disease had taken too firm a hold, and on Sunday the spirit passed to the realm of eternity. The funeral was held on Tuesday from the Christian church at this place, where Rev. Mann delivered a short sermon extending comfort to the bereaved relatives and friends of the dead. The remains were then conveyed to Rose Hill Cemetery where the ladies of the Order of the Eastern Star, of which the deceased was a prominent member, took charge of the service, and she was lowered to her final resting place according to the rites of that order. Mrs. Fleming, whose maiden name was Carrie E. Brown, was born in Knoxville, IA in Jul 1869 where she grew to womanhood. After attending college and graduating at the age of 18, she chose teaching as a profession, and has since followed that vocation. At the age of 20 she was married to O. B. Fleming in Clay Center Kan. on August 26, 1889. Of this union were born a son and a daughter, Clare aged 18 and Hattie aged 16. Coming to Colorado and Garfield county about ten years ago, Mrs. Fleming immediately became identified with the educational affairs of this and adjoining counties, and was unusually sucessful in her work in the different places where she was employed. She was an ardent supporter of lodge work, and held membership in the O.E.S. the Sons and Daughters of Justice, and the Rebekahs. She was also identified closely with several purely social organizations and at the time of her death was president of the Tri-County Federation of Women's clubs. Mrs. Fleming will be long remembered by her many friends in Rifle and elsewhere as a woman of unusual mental attainments, whose social qualifications were such as to cement strong friendships and whose work in life can be looked upon as a factor in the creation of higher ideals for the generation of which she was a teacher. A noble woman - no other tribute is greater and none is necessary.
