Carl Bartels Smith 1900 -1989 

Carl Bartels Smith a resident of Carbondale since 1973, died June 17 at 
Valley View Hospital. He was very active in the RSVP, AARP,  
secretary/treasurer of Carbondale Chamber of Commerce in the mid- 70's and 
assisted with many Potato Days
M.r. Smith was born July 24, 1900 In Chicago, Illinois to William and Emma 
Smith. He married Libuse (Libby) Kolar Smith on Jan. 12, 1927 in Chicago. He 
was a World War I Navy Veteran, attend­ed the University of Wyoming and 
Armour Institute in Chicago. For 46 years he worked as a chemical engineer 
with Dearborn Chemical Company of Chicago. 
Survivors include his wife Libby of Carbondale; three children, William 
David Smith of Orland Park, H=Illinois: Gail Carol Smith of Carbondale; and 
Charles Kolar Smith of Marlow-on-Thames, Eng­land; one brother, Samuel D. 
Smith 
of Claremont, California; five grandchidren, and two great-grand- 
children. 	. 

A  private service will be scheduled at a later date by Carl's family .. 
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial fund of st. 
Mary of the Crown Catholic Church, P.o. 'Box 64, Carbondale.
