Irwin Cemetery, Gunnison County, Colorado Transcribed by Darin D. Foran June 2001. The Irwin Cemetery is very very small so I will just give you the names of the stones that are there. The cemetery is located on Kebbler Pass and to get to the cemetery you can either take HWY 92 out of Delta Colorado which connects with HWY 133 and then the trail road that takes you to Kebbler Pass or you can drive from Gunnison Colorado through Crested Butte to get there, it is shorter and better road to come from Gunnison. Kebbler pass is at an elevation of 10,007 feet, and it is very beautiful there in the Spring and summer. The road is closed from late August to late May early June due to snow. At the entrance to the cemetery is a sign that reads: THE BRIGHT PROMISE OF RUBY SILVER DREW 5000 PEOPLE TO THIS AREA IN 1879. FROM AS FAR AS ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND. IRWIN BECAME A GHOST TOWN WHEN SILVER WAS DEMONETIZED IN 1884. THIS CEMETERY WAS KNOWN AS RUBY CAMP CEMETERY IN 1879. IT WAS RENAMED IRWIN CEMETERY IN 1880 APPOXIMATELY 50 BURIALS WERE MADE HERE BEFORE IT WAS ABANDONED IN 1885. On the back of the Mounument it states: THIS MOUNMENT WAS DONATED AND ERECTED BY THE COLORADO MOUNUMENT ASSOCIATION IN 1958 AND PLACED HERE BY COLORADO SURVAULT COMPANY OF GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO. Most of the graves are unmarked and the only marked graves are the ones from recent burials and they are as follows: BAMBRAUGH, MARY DIED JULY 31, 1881 AGE 17, DAUGHTER OF FOSTER BAMBROUGH. LORAH, RALPH 1907-1984 LORAH, MARY 1905-1993 RENEKER, DAVID LEE 12-1-1942-12-3-1979 ROZMAN, JOSEPH R SEPT 2, 1915 - JAN 10, 1980 ROZMAN, VONDA M. Accompaning it is an slanted upright marker with a poem written by his daughter Linda, this marker was erected June 2001 to replace a wooden marker that had been there previously. This stone had to be hand carried from the road to it place in the cemetery as the cemetery is unaccessable by vehicle. ***************************************************************************** Contributed for use by the USGenWeb Project (http://www.usgenweb.org) Archives and by the COGenWeb Project Archives (http://www.usgwarchives.net/co/cofiles.htm) by Darin D.
