Page 1. FOUND DEAD, BODY OF ANNIE (AGUIRRE) MAES DISCOVERED SUNDAY NIGHT BY HUSBAND. A 21-year-old Huerfano County Ranch wife was found dead in her home at Turkey Creek, located about 40 miles northwest of Walsenburg, last night at 7:30 o'clock. Huerfano County Sheriff Claud Swift disclosed this morning. Mrs. Annie Maes, the wife of Adolph Maes, 27 a farmer and sheepman, was found lying in a slumped position on a trunk in the small house. The body was discovered by her husband as he returned from doing farm chores. Swift said. Around the women's neck was a heavy, coarse, olive drab-colored towel, tied in an unusually strong knot, the sheriff's department announced. Maes reports that he and his wife began chores on his farm around 6:30 o'clock last night, Swift declared, with the young women returning to the house shortly before 7 o'clock. Twenty-five minutes later, Swift said Maes entered the home to find his wife's body, with an old army issued towel strongly knotted around her throat. According to preliminary investigations, County Coroner Dan Unfug told the World-Independent that the young woman had died by reason of "suffocation by strangulation." Unfug revealed late this morning that a postmortem is scheduled sometime today to determine the cause of death. "No other bruises were found on the body in our investigation last night," Swift told this newspaper, "and there were no signs of violence." Maes told Tony Velarde, under sheriff, that his wife was "despondent." The Maes' have one child, a five-month-old son. Swift disclosed a routine investigation is being conducted. HUERFANO WORLD. PERALTA BROTHERS CHARGED WITH KILLING OF SHERIFF FIDEL AGUIRRE. Trace of Blood Found on Shoes May Prove Gardner Boys' Guilt. Mob Swarms County Jail; Sheriff Swift Takes Couple to Trinidad Jail for Safety; Brother's Surrender with Hands In Air When Officers' Raid Home. Blood stains found on shoes and shirts worn by Paul and Peter Peralta of Gardner, may lead to their conviction for the fatal beating of Deputy Sheriff Fidel Aguirre. When a small army of men, bristling with high-powered rifles, surrounded the Peralta ranch home, eight miles south of Gardner, early this morning, the youths walked from the house with their hands in the air. The brothers, both in their late twenties, refused to make a statement to Sheriff Claud Swift who whisked them away to the Las Animas County Jail in Trinidad. A mob of over 100 citizens waited at the county jail here while officers traveled to Gardner to make the arrest. Rumors of possible violence to the prisoners caused officers to lodge the men in the Trinidad jail. Aguirre, on of Southern Colorado's outstanding peace officers and a member of the Huerfano County High School Board, was beaten to death while patrolling a dance at the Gardner Community Hall Saturday night. EYEWITNESS FOUND. Sheriff Swift reports that he has located a witness to the brawl. It was upon a tip-off from this witness that the Peralta brothers were arrested, according to reports, Aguirre had argued with one of the Peralta boys earlier in the evening. One of the brothers is alleged to have called the officer from the dance hall shortly before midnight, and it was then that the beating occurred. Sheriff Swift has the death weapon in his possession. The blood stained fence post, used for a club, was found near Aguirre's beaten and bleeding body. The post had a huge spike in one end, acting as a bayonet to pierce the officer's body. It is believed the first blow from the club struck Aguirre on the back of the skull. The witness, on whose testimony the crime was reconstructed, is reported to have pulled the assailants off of the nearly dead man. It is said that after Aguirre fell to the ground he was beaten and kicked. Besides a fractured skull he incurred lacerations about the throat and neck. His lower jaw was shattered in three places. He was breathing heavily when rushed to the Lamme hospital in Walsenburg, but expired about 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, having never regained consciousness. MABRY QUESTIONS COUPLE. Sheriff Swift and a posse questioned persons attending the dance, and Sunday combed the hills near, Gardner in search of the Peralta boys. Shirts and shoes they were wearing had been recently washed, reports state, however, a few traces of blood were said to be found. District Attorney John N.
