INQUEST SET FOR TUESDAY IN TRAIN DEATH OF CHILD. Funeral services were held yesterday for 10-year old DIANE MAE MONTOYA but interest in the accident which took her life remained high in the community with the announcement that an inquest into the tragic death would be held here next Tuesday. County Corner Herbert Furphy set the inquest for 7:30 p.m. in the courthouse. Diane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Montoya, 315 W. Sixth Street was struck and killed by the southbound Colorado & Southern Texas Zephyr passenger train about 4:30 p.m. Sunday as she sought to cross the tracks between Sixth and Seventh streets. The child's body was dragged at distance of about 300 feet before the train was stopped. She was badly mangled, and one arm was severed. Members of the train's crew told local police they saw the girl come from behind a warehouse in that area and thought she was playing. They said she crossed the tracks directly into the path of the train, apparently unaware of its approach. Crewmen said the trains horn was blowing. The train's crew included Paul H. Davis, Trinidad, conductor; E.R. Bratcher, Denver, engineer, and A.R. Terry, Trinidad, fireman. Larry Cox, 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cox, corroborated the trainmen's story. Eyewitness to the accident, Larry told Police Chief Mike Ramps that the girl ran in front of the train. Information gathered by investigating officers indicates that Diane was going to visit Mrs. Genovieve Cisneros, and elderly resident west of the railroad crossing whom the children of the neighborhood referred to as "grandma." City police and the coroner spent Sunday afternoon and much of Monday interviewing residents of the accident area in an effort to secure information and witnesses. Among those interviewed were Joe Jerant, operator of a grocery and motel on Seventh Street near the accident scene, and Joe Avellani, who resides on Sixth Street next to the railroad tracks. Jerent said he heard the train's horn. Avellani told officers he saw the child walk past his house and along the railroad tracks shortly before the train came by. Diane was born September 28, 1951, in Pueblo. She completed the fifth grade at Washington School. Along with her family she was a member of the Church of God in Christ, and it was from there that funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. yesterday. Family prayer services had been held the evening before at Furphy Chapel. Burial was in the family plot in the Masonic Cemetery. In addition to her parents. Dad's life on a Thumbnail: Pop spent his whole life in Walsenburg and Huerfano County, except for "a short visit" as he put it, with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Second World War. Dad and Mom were married in San Diego before he was sent overseas. He saw action in the Pacific Theater and was discharged in 1946. He returned home to begin his long career in public accounting, taking a short time out to father me, his only son, Hank, Jr. Dad always believed in his client's work came first, and if the job wasn't finished, he wasn't at ease. He was so worried the night before his death that he called me to his bedside to verify that all his clients' work were in order. After being reassured that all were on schedule, he said "Well I guess all my concerns are answered, I think I'll lay back now, why don't you go on home and do what you got to do. Now I can go to sleep." Pop could not got without first thinking of his clients. Well "Big" Hank has finally finished his work, he's laid down his pencils and pens, switched off his machines for the last time and has turned off the lights. Finally, he gets to go on his vacation. In fact, he and his old buddy Steve Persich started it together Friday morning with one final cup of coffee. Goodbye Pop, Gosh, how I'll miss you. Your loving Son, Hank Jr. HUERFANO WORLD. FREDERICK JOHN "FRED" WALSEN, grandson of the pioneer for whom Walsenburg was named, died Tuesday, November 24 in Denver. He was 81. Born June 9, 1917 in Denver, he was the only son of Fred George and Bertha Walsen. His father was involved in banking, insurance, and real estate. His mother was the daughter of J.B. Johnson, Walsenburg jeweler and merchant from 1889 to 1917. Mr. Walsen's grandfather, Heinrich Anton Fredrich Walsen, known as General Fred Walsen, was born in Prussia in 1841 and emigrated to America at age 18. He settled in St. Louis, MO and was employed by a cigar maker. In April 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army and also served with the Missouri National Guard before the end of the Civil War. In 1864 the young man accompanied an ox train of supplies to Fort Garland for Ferdinand Meyer and Company. Walsen received his citizenship in 1865 and in 1867 he returned to St. Louis where he married Emilie F. Sporleder, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Sporleder who were early pioneers of Huerfano County. Walsen moved to Badito on the Huerfano River in 1870 but soon relocated at the Plaza de los Leones on the Cucharas. Here he opened a store and became involved with local affairs. With several other pioneers such as Captain Cornelius Hendren, Evaristo Gonzales, John Albert, Joseph Bourcey, and August Sporleder, Walen was responsible for platting and incorporating the Town of Walsenburg in 1873, and getting the county seat moved to the settlement. He was the first mayor and the town was named in his honor. Gen. Walsen branched out from his mercantile business and was soon involved with cattle and sheep raising, railroad and toll road construction, banking and land development. He purchased large tracts of land as well as water rights and leased out coal lands and ranches. Besides Walsenburg, he was instrumental in the development of Las Vegas, NM and Ridgeway. He also had mines at Idaho Springs and owned property in several other counties in Colorado. In 1879 Walsen was made Brigadier General of the Second Division of the Colorado State Militia by Gov. Frederick W. Pitkin so from then on was called General. Gen. Walsen was elected state treasurer in 1882 and moved his family to Denver. He and his wife had five children, Lilly Johanna who died in infancy, Frieda Marie Gertrude, Emelia Fredericka Dorothea, Cora Fanny Hermina and Frederick George, all born in Walsenburg. Fred George continued his father's business affairs in Walsenburg for many years before moving permanently to Denver. He and Bertha had two daughters, Augusta Virginia and Frances Emelia and the one son. Fred George died in 1956 and his wife in 1969. Their daughters died within a few months of one another in 1990. Fred John Walsen was educated in Denver and graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He was an accountant until his retirement some years ago. He was also an avid researcher of history and classical music and, perhaps as a legacy from his maternal grandfather, of gemology. He collected many objects of art and history and generously donated many of these to Huerfano County's libraries and Francisco Fort Museum. His visits to the area were few but the latest occurred in the summer of 1997 when he made his final donation to the museum, his grandfather's sword. Mr. Walsen never married but dedicated himself to attending to family business and preserving its heritage. As the only son of an only son, his death ends the Walsen direct legacy. He was buried Monday in Fairmount Cemetery in Denver. HUERFANO WORLD. July 8, 1999. Page 1. ROLLOVER.
