1901 Bio - Spence, John H., Larimer County, Colorado Transcribed by Marta Norton January 30, 2000 The Berthoud Bulletin Newspaper Saturday, October 19, 1901 Republican Favorites Portraits and Biographical Sketches of the Candidates on the Republican Ticket John H. Spence Mr. John H. Spence of Masonville, what he unanimous choice of both the prohibition and republican county conventions as candidate for the office of superintendent of schools. The recognition speaks in no uncertain tones of the worth of the man, and that he merits the preference is condeded on all sides. A few years ago the Buckhorn corrsepondent of the Loveland Reporter spoke as follows of Mr. Spence. To those who are unacquainted with Mr. Spence, we take the pleasure in saying that he is a man of unflinching honesty and devotion to principle. His father an Ohio volunteer in the civil war, and whose health and fortunes were destroyed by wounds received in that conflict, died before he was born-leaving a widowed mother to struggle on and educate her children by heroic labor and self sacrifice. When she, too, succumbed to the struggle (having been denied the aid which was her due from the government, through a trifling break in the chain of evidence demanded by the pension bureau), Mr. Spence, though but a lad of an age at which such sacrifices are not demanded, divided with his sisters the debt contracted during her illness and death. While unflinchingly paying his proportion of these as well as that of a sister who died, he fitted himself for the position of teacher in the public schools of Ohio-where he taught with success at an early age. Later he came to Colorado, where through without friends or influence among the schools, he soon took high rank among our teachers, and was held in high esteem by County Superintendent Wilson, as well as by his fellow teachers, not only for his high ability as a teacher, but for his high sense of honor. Had be not abandoned teaching to lay the foundation of the more lucrative occupation of stockraising, he would, undoubtedly, have reached the very highest rank in the profession. =================================================== Contributed for use by the USGenWeb Archive Project (http://www.usgenweb.org) and by the COGenWeb Archive Project USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organization or persons.
