Grandview Cemetery: Fort Collins, Lamirer County, CO Section 2. http://files.usgwarchives.net/co/larimer/cemeteries/grandvw.txt Contributed by: Tim Nobis Transcription taken July 2002 Sexton Records current to Aug 2001 Location: Exit I-25 at CO14 (Mulberry Ave) and head west into town. Continue across College Ave and take your next right onto S. Mason. Follow for a couple of blocks to Mountain Ave. Turn left onto Mountain. Mountain ends at the cemetery entrance. Cemetery description: Grandview is a beautiful cemetery with lots of large trees and curving dirt roadways. It has over 30,000 grave spaces, and I estimate there are at least 20,000 burials here today. It is Fort Collin's oldest active cemetery and was established in 1887. The remains of two older cemeteries (The Post Cemetery and Mountain Home Cemetery) were relocated here. The cemetery is broken into sections. Some are numbered and others are indicated with a letter. The number sections are the newer ones opened shortly after a 1918 influenza epidemic made it clear that more space would be needed. Note: Names are presented in order of graves... It will help the user understand what and how I did things. - I started by recording the information as it appeared on the gravestone in the cemetery. -- I am working section by section, so that is how I am submitting the data. -- I concentrated on information that would be useful to a genealogist, so I did not necessarily record every word or symbol printed on the stone. -- I recorded the name in last, first format... then birth date with location (if recorded), death date and location, age, then any notes from the stone, finally I added other notes of interest (such as shared grave stones... see below) -- If I recognized a maiden name, then I enclosed it in ( )... Please understand that it was sometime difficult to distinguish between the actual Surname and maiden name, they could be switched by mistake. -- The only symbol I was confident I knew enough to record was the Mason's symbol. -- ???? or 19?? indicates that no death date was chiseled into the stone and no record of death exists in the cemetery records. -- Information enclosed in the notes enclosed in " " are taken exactly from the stone, other notes of interest about the stone will appear as straight text. - I then checked what I recorded against a copy of the cemetery records available at the Ft. Collins Public Library. -- I added information from these records to the transcription if I thought it would be useful or interesting (for example middle names) -- This print out is dated Aug 2001, so interments after this time I could not add information to. -- All information (except grave numbering) taken from these records is encased in [ ] to indicate that it does not appear on the stone. -- I also added in the names of individuals in unmarked graves --- You can tell them by the fact that all entries are enclosed in [ ] --- I took only the birth/death year for the reasons mentioned in the next comment. -- I did not take the month/day records since often the death date recorded is actually the interment date. --- Also it appears that this data base used the person's age and interment date to back calculate the birth date. So given the amount of extra work coupled with the possible inaccuracies, I felt it was best to just stick to what is on the stone. - Records appear in order by section, Lot, then Grave to give a sense of relative location to one another. - The note s/w means "shared with". A note such as s/w 4/56, 4/57 means that individual name appears on the same stone as the individual in lot 4 grave 56 and lot 4, grave 57. I also used s/w notation for family plots whenever there was one large central stone with the surname surrounded by a number of individual stones... Beyond that users can use the relative position of surnames to surmise relationship. =================================================== Contributed for use by the USGenWeb Archive Project (http://www.usgwarchives.net) and by the COGenWeb Archive Project USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organization or persons.
