The Sunrise Ranch Cemetery, Larimer County, Colorado http://files.usgwarchives.net/co/laplata/cemeteries/sunrise.txt Donated by Duane Kniebes June, 2002 Location Sunrise Ranch is located on both sides of County Road 29 south and west of Masonville. The cemetery is on the east side of CR 29, about 0.2 of a mile from CR 29 and 2.7 miles north of the intersection of CR 29 and US 34. Geographical coordinates are 40 degrees 26 minutes 39 seconds north, and 105 degrees 12 minutes 44 seconds west. Descriptions of Cemetery and Headstones As of May 20, 2001, the Sunrise Ranch Cemetery was the final resting place of 80 individuals, all of whom were members of the Church of the Emissaries of Divine Light community at Sunrise Ranch. For more on the Emissaries in general and Sunrise Ranch community in particular, see www.emissaries.org on the Internet. Because of the small size of the east-facing burial plots, all of the 80 burials appear to be cremains. All of the headstones are flush with the ground. Except for the headstone described immediately below, which is for five individuals, and the headstone for the Handzliks, all of the headstones are for single individuals. With the exception of Mr. and Mrs. Handzlik, who share a headstone, even when it appears that a husband and wife are both buried in the cemetery, there is no indication of their relationship on their individual headstones. Bishop Lloyd A. Meeker 1907-1954 Kathleen Meeker 1925-1954 Albert E. Ackerley 1908-1954 William Van Duzen 1943-1954 Sharon L. Call 1945-1954 The story behind the first headstone listed above involves the crash of a private plane, a Cessna 180, piloted by Bishop L.A. Meeker, on August 4, 1954. The crash occurred when the plane "plunged into San Francisco Bay, shortly after taking off from the Oakland, California, airport." In addition to Bishop Meeker, others killed in the crash were his wife, Kathleen, 29; Albert Ackerly, 46, who was the Bishop's assistant; Billy Van Duzen, 10; and Sharon Call, 9 The large headstone described immediately below is a cenotaph; as the headstone says, Bishop Cecil's ashes were actually buried the Emissaries' 100 Mile House in British Columbia, Canada. The headstone for Janine Dawn Cecil in the alphabetical list of individual headstones below was immediately to the left of Bishop Cecil's headstone, leading one to surmise that she was Bishop Cecil's daughter.
