ESTABLISHED 1871 JAMES JR. IVES, MANAGER 1911 ================================================= Estes Park Colorado's favorite summer resort, in Larimer county, 23 miles from Lyons, the nearest railway station. Daily stages in summer from Lyons and Loveland. Distance to Loveland 34 miles. Around Estes Park are mountain scenes of exceptional beauty and grandeur. In this territory is Long's peak and one of the most rugged sections of the Continental divide of the Rockies. The region is almost entirely above the altitude of 7,000 feet, and in it are forests, streams, waterfalls, snowy peaks, great canons, glaciers, scores of species of wild birds and more than a thousand varieties of wild flowers. In many ways this section is losing its wild charms. Extensive areas of primeval forests have been misused and ruined; the once numerous big game has been hunted almost out of existence, the birds are falling, the wild flowers vanishing and the picturesque beavers are almost gone. These scenes are already extensively used as places of recreation. If they are to be permanently and more extensively used and preserved it will be necessary to hold them as public property and protect them. To this end the Estes Park Protective and Improvement Association is endeavoring to have about 600,000 acres converted into a national park and game preserve, protected and used as a national park. Its flowers, birds and especially its big game, would increase, and its resources serve more people and serve them better than any other use of it could give. Permanent population 400.
