Grand Junction

    County seat of Mesa county. Is situated at the confluence of the Grand
    and Gunnison rivers in the Grand Valley. It is the largest city on the
    western Slope, having a population of 8,000. It has electric lights,
    electric railway, city and suburban water works, paid fire department,
    and the various other municipal improvements common to a town of this
    class. Its public schools are unsurpassed, the various religious
    denominations are well represented, and a new, modern Y. M. C. A.
    building has just been completed at a cost of $85,000. Contracts have
    also been let for other large buildings, notably the Elks' new building,
    which alone will cost in the neighborhood of $50,000. This is a terminus
    or division point for five railroads. The climate is ideal. With an
    altitude of about 4,600 feet, and protected by the surrounding mountains,
    we are free from the severe cold of winter and the hot winds of summer.
    On account of the climatic and soil conditions, this is the greatest
    fruit country in the world. The principal products are apples, pears,
    peaches, grapes and berries, and other small fruits. The shipments from
    Grand Junction for the season of 1910 amounted to about 3,000 cars of
    fruit for the district. The beet sugar industry is also large. In 1910
    the local factory handled approximately 100,000 tons of beets, or the
    largest tonnage of any year in the history of the factory.
