MAXWELL DROPS DEAD
ON HEARING BOTH HIS DAUGHTERS ARE WED

Telegram Announcing Romantic Marriage of Two Girls Too Much for Old Rio Grande 
Engineer

Grand Junction, Colo – the sudden death of J. B. Maxwell brought on by shock 
over news of the marriage of both his daughters has cut short the romance of 
Bessie and Goldie Maxwell who were married to Max W. Midgley and W. C. Riter at 
Salt Lake City after a twelve hour courtship.

When Maxwell, the oldest engineer in the Rio Grande Western Service, received 
the telegram at Helper, Utah, he fell from an attack of heart disease and did 
not recover consciousness.

The girls were en route to California with their mother and stopped off in Salt 
Lake City.  There they met Midgley and Riter, managers of the American and 
Liberty theaters of that city.  An automobile ride followed a visit to a moving 
picture show.  Much speedy lovemaking culminated in the wedding.  The girls 
then telegraphed their father asking the paternal blessing.  Instead they 
received the news of their parent’s death.

Maxwell was sixty seven years old and had been a resident of Grand Junction 
for over a quarter of a century.
