Burnham Military graveside services were held Jan. 4, 2002, in Hayward, Calif., for Owen F. Burnham, who passed away at his home Dec. 30, 2001, at the age of 83. Owen was born in Red Mesa, Colo., May 19,. 1918, to Vosco S. Burnham and Myrtle Fielding Burnham. Owen graduated from Mancos High School in 1938, where he played center for a championship basketball team. A quote from his yearbook said, "Owen was tall like a towering tree that stands in a forest primeval, is the form of this worthy gentleman." His friends fondly called him "Slim." Owen joined the service and was a proud veteran of WW2. He served his country in the South Pacific. He was a charter member of the Mancos VFW and a lifetime neighbor of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Owen made his home in Hayward, Calif., for over 45 years, where he was foreman of a large construction company and was a lifetime member of the Carpenters Union. His great love was the outdoors, especially fishing and caring for his beautiful yard and garden. He enjoyed coming to Mancos for his class reunion every year on Mancos Days. He married Clytie McRamey in 1949, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one loving companion. He leaves to mourn his passing a brother, Ben F. Burnham, Newark, Calif.; sisters Eileen Jones of Thatcher, Ariz., Ruth Seybold of Arvada, Colo., Gladys Saulters of Cortez and Ellen Paquin of Mancos. After Glow I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an after glow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun Of happy memories that I leave When life is done. -- Tom Vaughan, Editor The Mancos Times Serving the beautiful Mancos Valley since 1893 P.O.
