Burial was at Cedar Grove Cemetery; Pastor Paul K. Wilson officiated. Mike passed away at Mancos, Colo., on Wednesday, July 19, 2000. He was born Nov. 11, 1918, in Colorado Springs, Colo., son of George B. Young and Lucy (Hayes) Young. He was brought back to their ranch in Dry Creek Basin in San Miguel County at two weeks old, where he was raised and schooled. After graduating from CSU and majoring in Animal Husbandry, Mike returned to Dry Creek Basin in 1940 to take over the ranch for his ailing father. Mike Young was involved in the area's politics, serving on the school board, San Miguel Water Board, Southwest Water Board, as well as twenty-four years as San Miguel County Commissioner, and 4-H leader in Mancos and Dry Creek Basin. After selling his Dry Creek Basin ranch in 1978, Mike moved to Mancos, where he lived until his death. Mike was a member of the Elks Lodge and he was very involved and proud of his work in the AA program of which he was a 25-year member. Mike loved working with his horses, riding in the mountains, deer and elk hunting, and taking care of his ranch operation. He loved his work with sheep, cattle, horses, and raising mules. Mike's work was his hobby, pastime and love. When not doing these things, he loved to read and was a very good artist, especially drawing cartoons. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be dearly missed by all. Mike is survived by his wife, Shirley Young of Mancos; daughters, Carolyn Young of Norwood, and Jacquelyn Franklin of Norwood; sons, Dr. William Young and wife Diana Young of Eugene, Ore., and James Young and wife, Juanita Noth Young of Norwood; stepchildren and their spouses, Trudy and Randy Williams of Mancos, Chris and Cherie Russell of Palisade, Colo., Jimmie and Julie Reneau of Tijeras, N.M., and Chrissy Haines and Robert Taylor of Mancos. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Harvey and Bev Young of Mancos; two sisters, Lucinda "Cinny" Sullivan of Redvale, Colo., and Nancy Haller and her husband, Howard of Showlow, Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. Mike was preceded in death by his daughter, Martha Young; son-in-law Jim Franklin, and by Margaret "Babe" (Morris) Young, mother of his children, in 1997. Memorial contributions can be made in Mike Young's name at the Mancos Valley Bank.
