R. Calkins, 80, who passed away unexpectedly on Monday morning at 5:30 o'clock at Montrose hospital after a week's illness. As she had been active in performing her usual duties up to almost the hour of her illness, her death was a distinct shock to members of her family and her friends. All of her close relatives arrived and were recognized before her passing. Mrs. Calkins was born Julia Lindsay of Scottish parents at Bailey's Harbor, Wis., on July 8, 1866. Left an orphan as a small girl her life was the usual struggle of those days. At the age of 19 she was married to A. R. Calkins at Wyocina, Wis., where the couple spent thier early years of life together on a farm they homesteaded in southern Minnesota. In 1892 they sold out and came to Colorado, living first on a small farm near Montrose. After a year they homesteaded their ranch in Shavano Valley where she lived the remainder of her life. In 1935 Mr. Calkins passed away and she continued the operation of the farm and cattle business with the aid of her son, Ray L. Calkins. Survivors are two brothers, William E. Lindsay of Montrose and David J. Lindsay of Salt Lake City; two half brothers, Hugh McCready of Oregon and James McCready of Wisconsin; three children are Mrs. E. Everett H. Cain, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. William H. Barnes, Grand Junction; and Ray L. Calkins, Montrose. Seven grand-children are Mrs. Carlyle Musgrave, Seattle, Wash.; Miss Patricia Cain, Portland Ore,; Mrs. Maxine Swartz, Misses Eloise and Rose Marie Barnes, Grand Junction; Chief Yeoman LaVerne W. Barnes, now serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed in the Hawaiian Islands; Corporal Forrest W. Calkins, at present home on furlough and recently returned from overseas service in Korea. Another grand-son, Staff Sergeant Norvell A. Cain, of the Army Air Corp was shot down and killed in an air raid over Shanghai China. There are five great-grandchildren, Judith Ann and James Douglas Musgrave of Seattle, and Linda Marie, Elizabeth Gwen and Tommy Schwartz of Grand Junction.
