Calkins Passes Away at Advanced Age of 82 Years A. R. Calkins, aged 82 years, passed away at a local hospital to which he was taken several days ago, near midnight. His home was in upper Shavano where he had resided for many years. Mr. Calkins had resided in the valley for 42 years. He is survived by a son, Ray, of Shavano, and two daughters, Musie in Oregon, and Catherine in Wichita, Kansas. The remains are at the Kinsey mortuary awaiting funeral arrangements. A. R. Calkins was born in Cattargaus county, New York on December 18, 1852, being 82 years old at the time of his passing. In his childhood he moved with his parents to Wisconsin when that was a new country with railroads just going thru. As a young man he pioneered in Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa, breaking the virgin prairie with ox teams with the first settlers after the Sioux Indians were placed on reservations. On July 2, at Portage, Wisconsin, he was married to Miss Julia Lindsay, who, with three children, Ray L. Calkins of Montrose, Mrs. Everett Cain of Portland, Oregon, and Mrs. W. H. Barnes of Wichita, Kansas, survives. In 1893, Mr. Calkins moved with his family to Montrose, settling on a homestead in Shavano Valley where he has been engaged in ranching and cattle raising ever since. He was a quiet and home loving man of a kindly and friendly nature and possessed a keen sense of humor. His one thought was always for his family and his friends. Besides his immediate family Mr. Calkins leaves to mourn his passing one brother, J. J. Calkins of Portage, Wisconsin, and one sister, Mrs. Ora Jennings of Portage. Funeral arrangements are pending word from outside relatives.
