E. Lindsay, Early Day Resident on San Miguel River, Dies at age 90 Following a one day illness, W. E. Lindsay, 90, of the Shavano community died Saturday, Dec. 4, at Long's Rest Home. A resident of Colorado since March 17, 1894, he had made his home in the Montrose vicinity for the past 34 years. William Edwin Lindsay was born Oct. 20, 1863 at Chicago, Ill., the son of David and Catherine Duff Lindsay, both natives of Dundee, Scotland. His early years were spent in Wisconsin, in the communities of Bailey's Harbor, Green Bay and Portage City. He attended school at Bailey's Harbor. As a young man, he was engaged as a railway telegrapher, being employed with the Chicago Northwestern and other lines in the Chicago area. After moving to Colorado, he spent three years placer mining for gold on the San Miguel river at Cottonwood. He was residing there when the first wagon train came through over the present highway 90 to work on the Colorado Co-operative Colony at Nucla. He did not join the Colony, however, but returned to Chicago in 1898. On June 14, 1898 Mr. Lindsay was married at New Castle, Wisc., to Mary Ann Murphy. After the couple located in Colorado in 1900, he engaged in sheep raising, then in 1909 they homesteaded on Iron Spring Mesa, west of Leonard, where the family resided for the next 11 years. After moving to the Montrose area, Mr. Lindsay was engaged in the bee keeping business prior to his retirement in 1938. Four children wer born to the Lindsays: Mrs. O. L. (Alice) Hermanns, Grand Junction; Frank Lindsay, Montrose; Paul F. Lindsay, Englewood, Colo., and Mrs. Katherine J. Caldwell, who died Sept. 3, 1953. There are 11 grandchildren. A brother, David J. Lindsay resides in Salt Lake City. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, wife and daughter were a brother, Frank L. Lindsay, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah G. Bump and Mrs. Julia J. Calkins. Mr. Lindsay was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church, Knights of Columbus, the Railway Telegraphers Union and for all 11 years served as secretary of a San Miguel county school board. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 9:00 o'clock from St. Mary's Catholic church by Rev. Aloysius Bertrand. Interment in Grand View cemetery will be directed by Ormsbee Mortuary. Rosary services will be observed Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Ormsbee chapel.
