There will be a meeting of the Republican County Central Committee of Phillips County, Colorado, Saturday, May the 24th, 1890, at 2 o'clock p.m., over Holyoke State Bank, business of importance to transact. Let every member of said Committee be present, also, let all Republicans of said county who have the welfare of said party at heart, be present. - E.E. Brannon *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Mr. Stanley Stokes, of the Denver Times, was a caller at this office Saturday evening last. Mr. Stokes was interviewing the business men of the town with the view of publishing a write-up of Holyoke and vicinity in the Denver Times. Cuts of our principal buildings were furnished him to be used in the write-up. We are in hearty accord with this view of advertising the town, as we believe that no more effective plan for attracting the attention of the public to our town could be adopted. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Some of our farmer friends have made some complaint about the difficulty they sometimes have in securing water for their teams in Holyoke. We are informed by Mayor Kenyon that the city has been paying ten dollars a month for water at the Shriner well for watering teams. Lately there has been no engine attached to the pump and Charley Moore, the manager of the well, has been compelled to rely upon the windmill for pumping and, of course without any fault on his part, there are times when the water supply probably is somewhat limited. We are informed that the City Council has made arrangements with the Lincoln Land Company for a watering trough in connection with the water works to be put in place in the near future. When this is done, there will be an abundance of water for this purpose and at a less expense to the city than under the present system. This is certainly a move in the right direction, and our farmer friends will find our city council every ready to provide such conveniences for them whenever it is possible to do so. WAKEMAN NEWS We are having cool weather. A.C. Cauble has been batching for some time past. E.W. Decator is working for Fred Borland this week. Rev. Gilroy has gone east to buy corn for the Alliance. A.L. Burdette is nearly done planting corn. G.F. Greenwood is getting him a new windmill. H.W. Wakeman has been several herders, but he has fired them all so he is herding himself. The people here want the assessor to get a wiggle on him as it is getting late. Come now, Otis. We need more herders as cattle are going everywhere, but the Farmer's Alliance will have a herd law by and by. - TOM THUMB BEACHVILLE Windy and cooler weather. Farmers are busy planting corn. Phillip Peter is working for Oscar Troutman. Measles and chickenpox are prevalent in this vicinity. Peter Hackathal, of Holyoke, will move back to his claim next week. John Nelson, Sr., and son, Albert, were in Julesburg last Wednesday. Join the Farmer's Alliance and spend a social evening with your neighbors once a week. J.W. Whipple, of Paoli, and outfit passed through this place last Tuesday enroute for a tree claim in 9-44. T. Sprague and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Saylor were the guests of H.H. Mason and family last Saturday evening. We understand that there will be an effort made in the near future, to establish a new school district from territory now within District 3. On last Sunday morning, one of our neighbors caught a coyote pilfering his hen roost. Parties at once gave chase and after a long ride, Mr. Coyote gave his scalp. At the annual meeting of the several school districts in this vicinity. The following directors were elected; District 3, John L. Wilson, President; District 3, George S. Trego, Secretary; District 3, C.M. Mowry, Treasurer; District 44, H.H. Mason, secretary; District 72, O. Troutman, Treasurer. A sufficient amount of tax was levied to insure long terms of school the coming year. A Sunday school was organized at the Mason school house on the fourth inst. The following is a list of officers: Sup't John Crater, Sec'y Harry Sprague, Ass't Sup't Israel Crater, Ass't Sec'y Miss Georgian Mason, Treas. Isaac Saylor, Chorister, Mrs. Saylor. Sunday school at 3 o'clock p.m. Central Time. Let every one attend and make it a grand success. Attendance May 11th, twenty-one. - OLD MISERY COUNTY FAIR There will be a meeting of the citizens of this county at the Court House on Saturday, May 24th for the purpose of organizing a County Fair. We are informed that the mistaken impression has gotten out in some way that this move was being made by members of the Alliance, but we are instructed by a member of that order to say that it is the desire of their calling this meeting, that every resident of the county, who has even the slightest interest in the future welfare of this county be present and take part in the deliberation of the meeting. This is certainly a most commendable and enterprising undertaking, and anything that we can do to aid in perfecting the organization and making it a success, will gladly be done. Let us have a good attendance and an enthusiastic meeting and show that we mean business in the start. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* The enterprising real estate firm of Ellis & Dermond have within a few days closed a land deal involving about $10,000. It was an exchange of Phillips County farm land for a large stock of general merchandise at Waco, Nebraska. The land was valued at its true worth by the business men of Nebraska who have gone through the same experience that we are undergoing and which the people of every new country of the west must expect to meet. It has not been but a short time since one of our business men traded Phillips County land for a stock of goods in Nebraska, the land being valued at what land was really worth, and we are informed that the purchaser of the land has disposed of it at a good advance in price over what he gave for it. These transfers of land are certainly indications of greater activity in business than we have experienced for the last six months. With a fine prospect for a large crop of small grain and a consequent increased activity in business, our farmers and business men should certainly feel encouraged and we feel such is the case, for everyone we meet seems to wear a smile of content upon his countenance that was not wont to be there very often six months ago. The town and country have a bright future, but we cannot expect all sunshine for a cloud must now and then pass over that we may better appreciate the sunshine and we are now rapidly passing from under one of these small clouds. We state frankly a few general principles which in conducting the paper shall be strictly adhered to. In politics, the paper shall be straight republican, and our aim shall be to so conduct it as, under any and all circumstances, shall best subserve the general good and success of the party. We shall not hesitate to denounce political corruption wherever found, whether within or without the party. It shall be the aim of this paper to aid as far as possible in bettering the material interests of the town and the entire county. We shall always willingly listen to the advice and counsel of our patrons and friends, and shall give their advice its due consideration, but, while our name appears at the head of the paper, we shall insist upon being the editor. The benefit that any newspaper may be to a town or community depends very largely upon its patrons. As a matter of interest to you as well as a favor to us, we ask your help in making the STATE HERALD a successful means of advancing the best interests of our town and county.
