NEWSPAPERS: THE STATE HERALD, Holyoke, Phillips, Colorado: 12 Sep 1890, Vol. IV - No. 5 http://files.usgwarchives.net/co/phillips/newspapers/sthld1890/90sep12.txt Donated by: Vicki Conklin 20 Jan 2005 ====================================================================== STATE HERALD, Holyoke, Phillips, Colorado J.H. PAINTER Editor & Publisher 12 Sep 1890, Friday, Vol. IV - No. 5 Page One LOCAL LORE It is our purpose to note the arrival and departure of all guests to our city, and request those who have visitors to inform us of the fact. Local news items are always thankfully received. Gus Scheunemann is now clerking for George Clark. Mrs. White is now running the Miller House, near the depot. Mr. R.F. Addis, of Raymer, is now foreman in the News office. An immense crowd is reported in attendance on the Nebraska State Fair this week. W.C. Britton left this week on a business trip to Lincoln and other points in Nebraska. Mrs. H.F. Wickersham is in Lincoln this week attending the fair and visiting with her mother. W.E. Johnson visited the exposition at Grand Island and the State Fair at Lincoln, this week. Rolla Whitham, Miss Emma Whitham and Miss Pearl Wakeman went to Arickaree this week to visit friends. A.M. Woodford went east Tuesday evening on a short visit to his old home at Weeping Water, Nebraska. G.R. Ellis and Whitney Irwin left Tuesday for a business trip of several days through southwestern Nebraska. T.D. Tipton will move his family back this week to his town residence. They have been residing on his ranch for several months. A.A. Spahr is traveling in Nebraska this week in the interest of the Iowa Building & Loan Association of Des Moines, Iowa. H.J. Porter, of the Tribune, A.T. Guthrie and J.H. Daggy went to Grand Island this week to attend the Sugar Beet Exposition. J.R. Saxton, Ed Wilson and Sherman Peterson left last Thursday for a trip to Alliance and other points on the Alliance line of road. Mrs. Emma Powell, of Wichita, Kansas, arrived in Holyoke Monday on a visit to her father and mother, Mr. and Mr. Perry Moore. W.H. Moore, who has for some time been traveling for an agricultural implement house in Illinois, came home this week on a visit to his family. Judge Glynn, James Kidd, J.B. Gordon and Otis Castetter have been selected as delegates from this county to the state democratic convention at Denver. The city school opens next Monday with Prof. H.W. Barr as principal and Mrs. C.B. Timberlake, Miss Lizzie Gordon and S.H. Johnson as teachers in the other rooms. Judge Pendleton, of Yuma, spent a day in Holyoke this week looking after business matters. He reports the republicans of Yuma County in good fighting trim for the coming campaign. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* The farmer's alliance will hold a caucus at Holyoke on Saturday September 29th at 1 o'clock p.m. for the purpose of placing in nomination candidates for precinct officers in precinct No. 2. - By order of Chairman of Committee. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* The democratic county convention is called for the 10th of October. Our democratic friends have put off their county convention till the campaign will be about half over in order that they may be able to see which way the wind blows before they put their county ticket in the field. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* The republican primary for this precinct, held on Wednesday, resulted in the election of the following named delegates to the county convention. E.E. Brannon, J.H. Painter, P. Raymond, C.B. Timberlake, R.R. Blair, S.T. Hibbs, F.M. Smith and Gade Weaver. Candidates for justice of the peace B.F. Moore and W.G. Helland, for constable G.W. Norris. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* From all accounts we are pretty sure to have another siege of the la grippe this fall and winter. None of the past epidemics of the grippe have been confined to a single year and the disease has already appeared in Germany two months earlier than it did last year. Some cases have been reported in the eastern states and it will be very apt to travel westward as it did last year. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Williams' rooster crowed most too soon. The democrats made a slight gain in Vermont, and out came the News' rooster. If Williams had waited a few hours longer till he heard from Maine, he would have kept that fowl in his coop for the present at least. The poor bird seemed to hang its head out of shame for the blunder of its master, when Brannon's Maine election bulletin board was brought to the front and Williams looked as sick as the chicken. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Williams, of the News, says, "It is the McKinley and Lodge bills, and Cizar Reed, aided by the boy with grandpa's hat on that's doing the work." Yes, Williams, you are certainly right this time. Reed, the Caesar, the Czar, or the "Cizar," (It matters not which title you intended to give him,) is, without a doubt, the man who did the work in Maine. The country needs a few more "Reeds." *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* After the nomination of Mr. Krimblebine for sheriff by the alliance, Saturday, some of our democratic citizens seemed to be as well pleased as if they had gained a great victory and, when met on the street, gave you a knowing wink as much as to say, "I told you that we would kill the bear." We are at a loss to account for this unnatural democratic hilarity unless the democrats are in some way interested in the nomination. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* The county convention of the farmer's alliance convened on last Saturday according to the call and the proceedings of the convention seemed very harmonious. E.L. Ambler was chosen as chairman and C.R. Peter Secretary. After the adoption of some resolutions, the convention proceeded to place in nomination candidates for county offices. D. Krimblebine was nominated for sheriff and M.D. Copp for commissioner from district No. 1. We failed to secure a copy of the resolutions adopted and cannot give them as we had intended doing. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* The West Holyoke Sunday school had a picnic at the church, Tuesday afternoon and evening. An interesting program was carried out in such a manner as to reflect much credit upon all who took part in the exercises. The attendance was large and every one seemed to be well pleased with the exercises. We are glad to know that the labors of the active worker's in the Sunday school cause in West Holyoke are being rewarded with success in the growth of the school in interest and numbers. Every such good work should receive the hearty support of all the citizens of the town who are interested in the welfare of the people and the good of the town. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* George A. Quimby, of Shenandoah, Iowa, general manager of agencies for the Iowa Building and Loan Association of Des Moines, Iowa, is in Holyoke looking after the business of the Association. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+* H.J. Porter, on his return from the Sugar Beet Exposition at Grand Island reports that the sample beets taken by him to the Exposition from this county, on analysis, showed 13 per cent of sugar. This is about the same showing as that made by beets raised in the vicinity of Grand Island and planted two weeks earlier than the Phillips County beets. He says the party who made the analysis claimed that, had a careful selection of beets been made, they would have shown 18 or 20 per cent of sugar. This is considered a good showing for the sugar beet and the result is certainly encouraging. This has been an unfavorable year for beet culture and is not a fair test of what can be done. BEACHVILLE Quite cool the past week. H.H. Mason has been laid up with a sore hand the past week. John Senkins returned home from Eustis, Nebraska, last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Porter of Holyoke, were visiting at Oscar Troutman's last Sunday. Mrs. M. and Mary Peter were visiting at Israel Crater's last Friday. Will Heller has been cutting corn for F. Sprague the past few days. James Fisher and C.R. Peter were selected delegates from Eureka Alliance to the independent convention at Fort. Morgan. E.D. Ellis leaves for Rooks County, Kansas, this week where he goes to get his son. Mr. and Mrs. Crosier left for Hastings, Nebraska, last week. Oscar Troutman wishes us to mention his "corn" crop. We think it good as far as can be seen. F. Sprague and Ike Saylor leave for Wallace, Nebraska, where they go after a cow which got away last spring. Michael Troutman, of York County, Nebraska, came in for a visit with his son, Oscar Troutman. Mary Peter is staying with Grandma Trego this week. - OLD MISERY Ad - LOOK! LOOK! LOOK!
