Painter, Editor and Publisher 21 Aug 1908, Friday, Vol. 22 - No. 4 Page One WINDY VALLEY Ed Stayd made a swift trip to Best, Nebraska Sunday. Doc Norris and John Kettley drove to Wray last Saturday and returned Sunday. Mattie Slagle is visiting this week with her mother Mrs. C.J. Young. Miss Glendora Fair is visiting this week with Alta Kelsey. Mr. Sweeney of Nebraska visited in this vicinity Saturday and Sunday. The windy valley people were favored with a talk at the school house last Sunday by Rev. Mellinger. There was a large attendance. Mrs. Tobyne and children of Kansas visited relatives and friends in this vicinity this week. Cameron Young and W.B. Kelsey are hauling hay to town. Roasting ears are on the bill of fare in windy valley. -- MERRY WIDOW Page Four The fall term of the Holyoke schools will open on Monday September 7. For Sale, an office building, enquire of the Central Lumber Company. Mrs. J.W. Haver went to St. Joseph, Missouri last week to buy goods for her millinery store. Miss Alta Anderson left Holyoke Monday for a vacation with the home folks at Ayre, Nebraska. Miss May Mowry came down from Denver the first of the week for a visit with her parents. Barr, son and daughter, Henry and Lillian, who had been visiting the editor's family, left Friday evening for Denver, Fort Collins and other points of interest in the state which they will visit before returning to their home at Clarinda, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Swedlund of the Haxtun country passed through Holyoke Friday evening of last week on their return from a visit near Holdrege, Nebraska. He informs us that Phillips County can make a better showing for crops than the part of Nebraska they visited. The Woodmen picnic on the Holyoke school grounds Thursday was well attended. The program as published was carried out and all present seemed to have a good time. The speakers were Attorney Simms of Sterling and Rev. J.T. Jenkins of Holyoke who entertained the audience in their usual good style. The ball game between the Venango and the Beachville teams resulted in a score of 11 to 10 in favor of Venango. The Woodmen gave the people a very enjoyable picnic and it is to be hoped that there may be more of such enjoyable occasions. It does everybody good to stop work occasionally and take a holiday and we would all get more enjoyment out of life if we did this oftener. Mrs. W. Slack returned Thursday from a visit in Denver. Miss Ida Maddock returned last week from a visit at Hastings, Nebraska. Mrs. Mauk left Holyoke Monday for a visit at Carthage, Illinois. A.M. Axelson and D.W. Scott of Haxtun were in Holyoke Tuesday. W.E. Heginbotham returned Tuesday from a business trip to Denver. Mrs. W.E. Pugh and son, Frank, took the train Wednesday for a visit in Illinois. George Wilcox is reported as recovering nicely from his severe injuries received last week. G.W. Shuler went to Denver the first of the week to attend a meeting of the undertakers of the state. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Sheridan, May Pollock and Roy Sholes went to Cheyenne for the Frontier Day celebration. Miss Madge Crowner has been employed for another year as instructor in the grammar department of the Holyoke school. Miss Jessie Gerrish returned Wednesday from Vermillion, South Dakota where she had been visiting and attending summer school. The Baptist ladies have postponed their tea at Grandma Irwin's from the 20, to the 27, on account of the Woodman picnic. Supplement Page Glen Lewis went to Denver this week for a visit with friends. James Moore and a niece of Fort Morgan are visiting his son, John, of this county. They are on their return trip from a visit in Boston. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and daughter from Illinois are visiting the family of C.E. Olmsted of Holyoke. The Catholic church building is being repainted which improves its looks very much. Miss Gladdys Thompson returned Thursday from a visit at Holdrege and other points in Nebraska. Work is progressing in a very satisfactory manner on the new pumping plant for the town water works. The pipe connection has been made, the big boiler has been placed in position and the plant will be ready for work in the near future. AMITIE A great corn crop is assured for northeastern Colorado. Miss Belle Smith of Champion, Nebraska is visiting her sister Mrs. Herman Poe. Herman Poe lost 2 head of horses during a thunder storm one day last week. This vicinity was full of agents last week. One fruit tree agent, one insurance agent and one who got his dinner at a certain place and we suppose forgot what his business was as he failed to settle for his dinner and horse feed. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Dot Harmon August 11, a boy. Jeffrie Brothers are building a new granary, the old one is too small for this year's crop. C.H. Moore has his big steam plow at work on the Patrick ranch. We understand that John Wilson has sold his farm to A.E.
