AMHERST Fred Kropp, after a long illness, passed away last Sunday. His many friends mourn his departure and extend their sympathy to the bereaved wife and children. The Amherst school returned the visit of school 26 last Friday. A ball game and spelling match were the amusements of the day. Amherst still holds the championship as spellers but they can only hold an even tally in the ball game. Mr. DeArmond returned to Amherst to spend Thanksgiving and eat roast duck at Mr. Sloan’s. Charles Redies experienced quite an accident last Tuesday on his way home from Holyoke. It was quite dark and the horses ran into a ditch and overturned the carriage. The occupants were thrown out, but aside from a few injuries to the carriage nothing serious happened. Glendora Fair returned from Sterling Monday morning. A.B. Hanway lost another good horse last Tuesday. Two of Mr. Kropp’s brothers were here to attend the funeral, but two of his sisters arrived too late. Mrs. Alice Fair made a visit in the hills last Saturday and is quite fascinated with the country. Sleighing is fine around Amherst. Miss Etta Roberts was unable to return to her school on account of the deep snow. Victor Fair came home from the hills as corn husking in this deep snow is unpleasant. Roy Mason of Wray was a visitor at the Amherst school Monday. Mr. Fair had a yearling steer drowned in the reservoir last week. -- HOMESTEADER No. 9278. TREASURY DEPARTMENT Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Washington, C.C., November 21, 1908 Whereas, by satisfactory evidence presented to the undersigned, it has been made to appear that “The First National Bank of Holyoke” in the Town of Holyoke, in the County of Phillips, and State of Colorado, has complied with all the provisions of the Statutes of the United States, required to be complied with before an association shall be authorized to commence the business of Banking; Now therefore I, Lawrence O. Murray, Comptroller of the Currency, do hereby certify that “The First National Bank of Holyoke” in the Town of Holyoke, in the County of Phillips, and State of Colorado, is authorized to commence the business of Banking as provided in section fifty one hundred and sixty nine of the Revised Statutes of the United States. In testimony whereof witness my hand and seal of office this twenty-first day November, 1908 Lawrence O. Murray, Comptroller of the Currency There is a new Painter in town. About 18 inches of snow fell in this county last Sunday. Who said moisture? Mrs. J.H. Millage is erecting a large two story residence on her farm near Holyoke. J.H. Painter has taken in a partner. The style of the new firm is Painter & Son. Mrs. McKee writes from boulder that her son, Lawrence, is very sick with typhoid fever. Albert Rehfeldt is erecting a large residence on his farm adjoining the town on the northeast. Millicant Painter, who has been quite sick with scarlet fever, is now able to be up. Ed Hethcote has erected a tool house on the rear of his business lot on Inter Ocean Avenue and will erect a large cement block business house on his lot as soon as the frost is out of the ground. Ed will use the basement for the manufacture of cement blocks and cement brick. Miss Mamie Arens, who has been quite sick with typhoid fever, is convalescing. Frank Caldwell and family left Holyoke Wednesday for Beardstown, Illinois. He returns to his old home to care for his aged father. Mr. and Mrs. Hans Peterson and J.A. Peterson of Denver arrived in Holyoke last week to care for their brother, Max, who is quite sick with typhoid fever. The Farmers and Merchants Bank of Holyoke has put up a new sign which is by far the neatest sign ever displayed in our city. It reads First National Bank of Holyoke. We congratulate the members of this banking house upon this change. Say! See here, you fellows that don’t like this town: did it ever occur to you that this is a great big world, and that there are roads leading from Holyoke in all directions of the compass, and that there are no strings on you? Well then --- ANNOUNCEMENT To the Public. - I am a stranger in your town, only having been here a few days, but this does not lessen the fact that I am wonderfully interested in the community and propose to make it my home. I hope you will all treat me fine and I cordially invite you to call and see me. I am the fourth in the family and am a boy. My dad is well pleased with me, but would rather I had been twins. However, perhaps sometime in the future he can persuade Mr. Stork to bring around another little body of the male persuasion. I made my arrival, without any clothes on, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Painter last Saturday morning, and I shall call J.H. “Dad” whether he likes it or not. My name is John Henry Painter.
