Painter, Editor and Publisher 14 Feb 1908, Friday, Vol. 21 - No. 29 Page Four Ira Gray of Haxtun is in town today. J.B. Johnson of Haxtun was in Holyoke Monday. Work was resumed on Harve Conklin’s new dwelling last week. The Haxtun people are talking of incorporating and putting on city airs. Otto Fulscher’s new dwelling house is rapidly nearing completion. Mrs. Mauk returned Tuesday from a visit at her old home at Carthage, Illinois. Rev. Winterbourne, J.O. Anderson and G.W. Gordon of Haxtun were in Holyoke yesterday. J.D. Heater returned Thursday from Boise City, Idaho, where he had been for a few months. S.H. Johnson and G.W. Shuler attended a meeting of the republican state central committee in Denver Wednesday. Miss Alta Kelsey left Saturday for a visit in Kansas. Benjamin Anderson of Haxtun was in Holyoke Tuesday. Benjamin DesLarzes returned Monday from a trip to Iowa. George Kelsey left Holyoke Monday for Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mrs. E.K. Lewis visited a few days this week with friends in Denver. D. Price of the Haxtun country was in Holyoke Tuesday on business. Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Slack left Holyoke Thursday for a visit in Iowa. S.T. Thompson returned Tuesday from a visit with his aged mother at Bay City, Michigan. Each of the Holyoke meat markets has recently been very neatly repainted on the inside which improves their appearance very much. A valentine social will be held at the court house this evening under the direction of the Epworth League and the Baptist Young People’s Society. M. Cannon, one of the early settlers of this county and who still owns land near Holyoke, is now located at Newkirk, Oklahoma. He writes that that is a nice country but no nicer than Phillips County, Colorado. During the past two weeks the following named readers of the Herald have advanced their subscription: A. Green, C.G. Campbell, A.C. Cauble, S.N. Dille, John Wright, George Wright and S.S. Berry. In a race on Wednesday at the fair grounds, between Proctor Knot owned by Peter Jones and Grace owned by Earl Berryman, Proctor Knot daylighted the other horse. On the 22nd, Proctor Knot will run against Fox, owned by Earl Berryman. The Baptist and Methodist church societies of Holyoke have each recently put a new lighting plant in their church building. This is an improvement that has been badly needed for some time as the Rockafeller oil has not been furnishing a very good light. The plants are the latest improved gasoline lights. L. LeBlanc and August Scheunemann recently visited business points in Nebraska and other states east of us when on their trip east to buy goods and they report general business in Phillips County better than in any town they visited. This should certainly be encouraging news to the people of our county. S.S. Berry returned Saturday from a trip to the San Louis valley. We understand that he has decided to open a real estate office at Alamosa and that B.L. Vance of Grant will move to Holyoke and represent the Button Land Company at this point. Later - Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Berry left Holyoke Thursday for Alamosa where they will make their home. They have many friends in Holyoke who regret very much to see them leave our town and wish them success in their new home. Mrs. J.E. Shepard returned this week from a visit at Stromsburg, Nebraska. Charles Dillabaugh returned to Holyoke this week from Iowa where he has been for a few months. Another vault is being built for the Farmers and Merchants Bank. Ed Hethcote is doing the work. BEACHVILLE Mrs. Lounsbury visited with the family of her brother, Mr. Caldwell, last Tuesday. Mrs. Jennie Cramer has been quite sick but at this writing is reported better. Walter Ellis moved his family to his new place the first of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Goddard’s little daughter has been very sick but is reported better. Kenney Brothers shelled corn for W.H. Woodhams the first of the week. Some people’s talk is like the conversation of ducks, nothing but wah-wah. Mr. and Mrs. Lingreen and family and Miss Anna Hargreaves visited at Mr. Lounsbury’s Sunday eve. Mrs. Crater has been quite sick but is reported better. Any one wishing first-class horse shoeing call on the Beachville horse shoer G.W. Utesler. -- Hezekiah. SCHOOL NOTES One day last week Mrs. W.D. Kelsey was a visitor to the grammar room. Mabel Brown, after some absence from school, returned this week. Ethel Show, being absent from school the 8th grade is decreased one. The 7th grade is commencing reviewing in some branches. The grammar room pupils will give a program in the high school room Friday a.m., February 28th. Everybody invited to come and bring your friends.
