Painter, Editor and Publisher 24 Jul 1908, Friday, Vol. 21 - No. 52 Page One RECEPTION At the reception at the home of Mrs. W.L. Irwin on last Friday afternoon, given by old settler ladies of Holyoke and vicinity, to Mrs. P.B. Reynolds of Lexington, Nebraska, formerly for several years a resident of Holyoke, there were 22 of the old settler ladies present. There was no formal program for the reception but each lady was called upon to give the date of the beginning of her residence in the county and also relate some of her experiences back in the days of 15 or 20 years ago. A general good social time was enjoyed by all, and after the ladies had partaken of some tempting refreshments and were ready to go to their several homes it was suggested by some one and heartily endorsed by all, that this date, the 17th day of July, should be taken as the beginning of an annual ladies' old settlers meeting. This is certainly a good move and it is to be hoped that the ladies will carry out this good resolution. The ladies present and the date of the beginning of their residence in the county are given below: Mrs. F.M. Smith, May 16, 1888 Mrs. W.D. Kelsey, May 30, 1888 Mrs. C.M. Mowry, March 1888 Mrs. L.P. Foster, March 16, 1886 Mrs. S.A. Irwin, March 1897 Mrs. S.S. Worley, June 1886 Mrs. L. LeBlanc, Nov 1890 Mrs. J.W. Young, Sep 1887 Mrs. M.D. Copp, Oct 1886 Mrs. J.H. Painter, June 1890 Miss Madge Crowner, spring of 1892 Mrs. L.M. Reynolds, Feb 1888 Mrs. F.L. Hoyt, Dec 1889 Mrs. Fred Borland, April 1888 Mrs. S.H. Johnson, June 13, 1889 Mrs. W.G. Helland, Dec 1886 Mrs. G.W. Shuler, May 28, 1888 Mrs. G.W. Garland, March 1, 1888 Mrs. J. Heginbotham, March 1888 Mrs. W.L. Irwin, May 1886 Mrs. S.N. Dille, Dec 1888 Miss Wilson, a guest of her sister, Mrs. S.H. Johnson, was a guest at the reception. The reception was gotten up very hurriedly and quite a number of the lady old settlers were not reached with notice of the reception. A CARD A deep sense of obligation and gratitude to the friends who so kindly planned and successfully managed the late pleasant reception in our honor, at the Irwin home, prompts at least a few words of appreciation publicly expressed. "Blest be the tie that binds" applies in a marked degree to the pioneers of a community, who "blazed the way" for succeeding immigration, for people who amid the many conveniences and luxuries of later years, little realize the hardships and struggles of those whole lives were cast upon the virgin soil of these prairies, when the "dry years" blighted fond hopes and only the faith that a kind Providence would yet make "the desert to blossom as the rose" sustained the hardy men and women of this country on "hopes deferred." To one, who first saw what is now Holyoke early in 1887, and contrast it with what we now view of abundant harvests, commodious and elegant residences in country and town, spacious business blocks, well paved avenues, churches and schools, vying with towns of larger growth, and last, but not least, an intelligent populace, devoted to its best interests in all lines of endeavor, we trust we may be pardoned for a degree of pride that we are counted in the "pioneer class, " and for ten years had some humble part in the moral, educational and material weal of this people, with whom, for the past few weeks, it has been our good fortune to mingle. May we not indulge the hope that peace prosperity and Heaven's favor may be abiding guests in all Phillips County homes as the years come and go. -- Cordially, Mrs. P.B.
