Painter, Editor and Publisher 19 Jun 1908, Friday, Vol. 21 - No. 47 Page One C.H. Moore is breaking 100 acres of prairie with his big steam plow for Olmsted Brothers, west of Holyoke. AMITIE Rain, sunshine, more rain and more sunshine. Al Herenden was down from Sedgwick putting crop on his claim. Eastern Colorado is all right after all we are neigher drowned out or washed or blown away with cyclones, just plenty of moisture to make crops grow. Our poutryman and weather doctor, E.E.T. Hazen, is kept very buey these days keeping count of the little chicks and measuring the rain fall. O.M. Gillis and wife spent Sunday with H. Norris and wife. Children’s day was observed at the Pleasant Valley church Sunday June 14 with a very interesting program. Fred Borland’s house was struck by lightning during a thunder storm last week and was quite badly splintered up. Mrs. Borland who was up stairs was quite severely shocked. Mrs. H.L. Carpenter, son and daughters have gone to Ragan, Nebraska to visit Mrs. C’s parents. Mrs. Al Herenden has gone to Julesburg, Colorado for an extended visit. Henry Behnfeldt sold 160 acres of land to a Mr. Barnes of Nebraska and we understand that he expects to make Phillips County his home in the near future. -- Virgo J.W. Jackson recently bought a half section of land a couple of miles northeast of town. Mr. Jackson owns considerable land in the vicinity of our town and is showing good judgment in having it put under cultivation. The Millage big steam plow started in Tuesday to break 100 acres on this half section. E.F. Dawson of Vermillion, South Dakota is in Holyoke looking after land interests. E.E.T. Hazen reports 1.69 inches precipitation of moisture for this week up to Wednesday morning. Holyoke can beat that but we cannot give the figures for it. Winifried, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Whitney has been sick for several days with typhoid fever and Wednesday evening her parents left Holyoke with her for Omaha for medical treatment. Page Four Vernon Smith, Tom and Frank Hargreaves who had been attending the Denver University returned this morning to spend their vacation at home. Dr. F.M. Smith left Holyoke Saturday to attend a meeting of the State Pharmaceutical Association at Glenwood Springs. Ethel Helland attended the Epworth League state convention at Montrose this week and will visit relatives at Colorado Springs before returning home. Lida and Minnie Fiedler returned last week from Colorado Springs where Lida was attending school. Miss Leah Stetter left the first of the week to attend summer school at Greeley. Floyd Burnett returned this week from a trip east. A man by the name of Slake was found dead in the hills south of Holyoke one day this week. It is thought he was struck by lightning while looking for stock. A.M. Axelson of Haxtun was in Holyoke Friday. J.B. Johnson of Haxtun was in Holyoke Monday. J.M. Irwin returned Monday from a trip into New Mexico to buy cattle. The county had another heavy rain Tuesday and vegetation is blooming. Ed Finch of the Haxtun country was transacting business in Holyoke Saturday. J.H. Olson, grain merchant of Haxtun, was transacting business in Holyoke Monday. Charley and Fred Johnson from the west end of the county were in Holyoke Tuesday on business. Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Olmsted and children left Holyoke Saturday for a visit at Lincoln, Nebraska. Mrs. Estella Summers left Holyoke Saturday for Boulder where she will attend the summer school. Miss Gertrude Reed of Greeley has been employed as assistant principal of the Phillips County High School. O. Canaday, W.E. Heginbotham and Carl Shuler went to Denver Friday to attend the races at Overland Park. Mrs. and Mrs. Jacob Millage returned Tuesday from a trip to Denver where he went to undergo a surgical operation. Miss Bertha Johnson, assistant cashier of the Farmers and Merchants Bank is visiting the home folks at York, Nebraska. Mrs. King of Peoria, Illinois is visiting her son George of Holyoke. He met her at Denver last week and came home with her. Miss Jennie Sutherland will be in the office of the county superintendent Saturdays during my absence. -- Estella Summers W.D. Kelsey, W.L. Slack and R.N. White attended the democratic state convention at Glenwood Springs this week, leaving Holyoke Friday evening. Mrs. R.N. White accompanied her husband for a visit in Denver. Otto Fulscher returned Tuesday from a visit in eastern Nebraska. M. Anderson of Haxtun was in Holyoke a few hours Tuesday on business. Mrs. Jennie Wilson of Evansville, Indiana is visiting her sister, Mrs. S.H. Johnson of Holyoke. George Brooks and daughter of Republican, Nebraska arrived in Holyoke Tuesday for a short visit. Mrs. L.P. Sears returned on Friday of last week from a visit of a couple of weeks with her son Charley at Denver. Mrs. M. Odland returned Tuesday from a visit at Vermillion, South Dakota. Her sister Miss Larson and a friend, Mrs. E. Harmon accompanied her. John Tappan’s address is now Beaverton, Oregon. He writes that he has bought property there and so far is well pleased with the country. Hon. O.C. Zingg, formerly of Holyoke, now residing in Greeley, arrived in Holyoke Tuesday to look after his real estate interests in the county. J.W. Jackson has bought the Fuqua residence property near the school house. His son and family who arrived in Holyoke this week are occupying the property as their home. O.H. Sholes and C.R. Sears who have been in Denver for some time training their horses on the Overland track, left there the first of the week for Wymore, Nebraska, where they have entered their horses for the races.
