Miss Cora Kelsey returned last week from Denver where she has been attending the University. Judge Taylor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who had been in Holyoke for the past week looking after land interests, left Wednesday for Denver. Rex Evans of this county who is attending business college at Quincy, Illinois has finished the study of banking with the highest grade given in the college for several years. The painting of the Methodist church building just completed makes a great improvement in the appearance of the building. Cement steps and platform have been built in front of the vestibule and a hail screen has been put on the windows. The most of the expenses of these improvements has been provided for by the ladies aid society. PETERSON - NORRIS At the home of Mrs. M. Bonner, sister of the bridegroom, at Imperial, Nebraska on Wednesday, June 17, 1908, Rev. Haggerty officiating, Fred Peterson of Yuma County and Miss Mamie Norris of this county were united in marriage. The bride is an adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Norris and a granddaughter by adoption of C.M. Dyer who are numbered among the earliest and most highly respected residents of the county. She has spent her whole life in Phillips County and the number of her friends is limited only by her acquaintance. The groom is an enterprising young ranchman of Yuma County who is highly respected by a large acquaintance in that county and this. The young couple will make their home on the ranch in Yuma County. The Herald offers best wishes. The matron’s contest given Thursday evening of last week under the management of the W.C.T.U. was well attended as such entertainments in Holyoke always are. The ladies who took part in the contest were Mrs. S.N. Dille, Mrs. J.W. Jewel, Mrs. R.J. Millage, Mrs. Fred Burchett, Mrs. E.G. Summers and Miss Mellinger. The ladies gave the audience a first class entertainment and deserve great credit for the able manner in which they rendered the selections of the program. It is not every town the size of Holyoke that can furnish as many good speakers among the ladies as Holyoke can and the success of this entertainment should stimulate the girls and young ladies of the town to renewed efforts to excel in the accomplishment of public speaking. The judges were Rev. J.T. Jenkins, P. Zimmerman and F.L. Hoyt. They awarded the medal to Mrs. Fred Burchet. Some good music was furnished by the Holyoke cornet band. The boys appeared for the first time in their new uniforms and they made a fine appearance in uniform. Page Four Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Lyman returned last week from their wedding trip. Miss Verda Stewart left Holyoke Monday for a visit at Grand Island, Nebraska. Frank McElroy is building a large new dwelling house on his farm southwest of Holyoke. Dr. F.M. Smith returned Monday from Glenwood Springs where he attended the meeting of the state pharmaceutical association. Two big steam plows are turning over the prairie sod within two miles of Holyoke this week. This looks like business and it is business by the whole sale. The land around Holyoke is being rapidly put under cultivation and Holyoke people will soon be forced to take a drive when they wish to see the buffalo grass prairie. About $450 worth of cream was shipped from Holyoke last week. About $2,000 a month is now being paid to the farmers for cream shipped from our town. This is quite an important industry for that amount of money put in circulation every month helps business considerably. Frank Sprague returned Friday of last week from a trip to Denver. Mr. Ferris came back Tuesday from a trip to New Mexico with four cars of cattle. C.W. Black returned Tuesday from Montrose where he was looking after his fruit farm. Mrs. Otto Fulscher and children returned to Holyoke Tuesday from a visit at Sterling and other points in Nebraska. H.N. Linebarger is one of the delegates to the national democratic convention to be held at Denver. The Holyoke Republican has changed hands, Editor McFadden having sold out to T.C. Crist. Not only has the material been transferred but its politics has switched to democracy. This will necessitate a change of name as well. - Akron Pioneer Press Editor Herald - To avoid discrepancies such as occurred last week, I will, in the future report the precipitation at the close of the “record week,” that is, the week end on which report is made to Section Director of U.S. Weather Bureau which is on Friday. Therefore the weekly reports to both papers will be for the week ending Friday preceding publication. Thus both will get the same, which is not the case where you publish on different dates and a rainfall occurs between dates and is reported, as was the case last week. The total precipitation for the week ending Friday the 19 was 1.76 inches total for the month to that date 2.77 inches total for May 4.45 inches. - E.E.T.
