Painter, Editor and Publisher 6 Mar 1908, Friday, Vol. 21 - No. 32 Page One MARRIAGE - Karl L. Spence and Miss Sadie Mae Doher were married on February 25th at Franklin, Nebraska. Karl spent several months in Holyoke a few years ago and filled the position of foreman in the Herald office during the absence of the regular foreman. He is now publishing the Blade at Bladen, Nebraska and is doing a very successful newspaper business. During his short residence in our town he made many friends who have the best of wishes for him. The Herald extends best wishes for a prosperous and happy life. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Burt of Haxtun were in Holyoke last Friday. NOTICE OF BIDS FOR TOWN WELL Notice is hereby given that sealed bids will be received by the Town of Holyoke for the digging of a well with 9 5-8 inch casing, also for a 16 slat wood tubing. Contract to include installing of pump for the same. All bids to be submitted by March 10?, 1908. The board reserves the right to reject any or all bids. -- W.G. Helland, Town Clerk A young ladies’ oratorical contest under the direction of the W.C.T.U. was given at the court house in Holyoke last Friday night. The following named young ladies took part in the contest. Misses Bertha Hall, Bessie Troutman, Ethel Saylor, Edna Trego, Mary Pearson, Ilene Pennington and Bessie Wilcox. The young ladies acquitted themselves well in the rendering of their chosen selections and the entertainment was a credit to those who spoke and to those who had in charge the preparation for it. The judges were Mrs. Leon Kepler, Mrs. W.L. Irwin and Mrs. Dr. Smith and they awarded the silver medal to Miss Mary Pearson. The Holyoke cornet band furnished some good music for the entertainment. Elmer Skold of the Haxtun country was in Holyoke Friday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. George Barbour and sons, John and Charley, came down from Denver last week and will make their home on his farm in the southeastern part of the county. Mr. Barbour was one of the early settlers of the county a number of years ago. He however had faith enough in the country to hold his land and is now well satisfied that he did so. The many oldtime friends of the family are pleased to see them return to our county. M. Anderson has sold to C.A. Bryant of Sterling his general stock of merchandise store in Haxtun and will give his time and attention to the lumber and implement business. Mr. Anderson has been in the general mercantile business at Haxtun for the past nine years and his business has been very successful. He moved a small stock of goods from Bryant to Haxtun in 1899 and his business grew rapidly from the very start till he has built up a business second to none in his line in this corner of the state. McKibben returned last week from a visit to her old home in Ohio. Her mother returned with her. Mr. and Mrs. John C. Coetzel of York, Nebraska, who had been visiting the family of M.V. Summers left Thursday for home. A little 5 months old girl of Mr. and Mrs. Lige Goddard died at the home of S.D. Goddard of this county Thursday March 4 from lung fever. Hugh Gale, J.W. Greenemyer, John Peterson and Attorney A.J. Shafer of Holdrege, Nebraska came up to Holyoke Wednesday for the trial of Axelson vs. Peterson et al in the county court. DIED - At the home of Henry Holmar of this county on February 21, 1908, William Helmke from consumption. The boy was taken to his old home in Ohio from where he had recently come in the hope of relief from disease. Guernsey, nee Hendrickson, was born September 8, 1867, in the state of Nebraska and died at her home in Phillips County, Colorado March 1, 1908 from a severe attack of pneumonia. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hendrickson of this county and came to the county with her parents about 22 years ago. A few years after coming to the county she was married to Griffin Guernsey and to them were born 3 children who with her husband survive her. The funeral services were conducted from the school house near the home, on Tuesday March 2, Rev. Winterbourn of Haxtun preaching the sermon, and the body was laid in the country cemetery. She was highly esteemed by a large number of friends and the family have the sympathy of all in their sorrow. NEERGREVE Miss Rook began teaching last Wednesday after a couple of weeks vacation. A brother and sister of J.W. Webermeier from Wisconsin are here for a visit. Lee Johnson and Frank Pugh spent last Thursday evening with the bachelor on the creek. James Churning was over helping A.A. Shafer break horses last week. John Stetter has moved his family to their homestead southwest of town. S.D. Van Meter was helping Fred Borland a few day’s last week. Mamie Mathers was over to visit Willa Webermeier one day last week. Lee Johnson has accepted a position as barn clerk for A.L. Whitney is very sick with pneumonia. W.G. Reaves from Farnham, Nebraska has accepted a position in the City Drug Store. Joe and Byron Aikin left Holyoke this week with an immigrant car for Blessing, Texas where the family will make their home. We regret very much to have the family leave our county and hope that later on they may see their way clear to return. DIED - At the home of his father in this county, from spinal meningitis, on Monday, March 2, 1908, Melvin Stecker, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Stecker, age 17 years, 4 months and 24 days. He was born in Iowa and went with his parents from that state to South Dakota where they resided till recently when they moved to Phillips County, Colorado. He had been to a neighbor’s on horseback and when he returned complained of not being well and soon became unconscious and never regained consciousness. The funeral was conducted from the Baptist church in Holyoke, Rev. Jenkins preaching the sermon and the body was laid in the Holyoke Cemetery. The family has the sympathy of all in their sorrow. C.W. Black returned this week from a trip to Montrose and other points on the western slope. J.W. Webermeier has been very sick but is able to be up and around the house.
