Painter, Editor and Publisher 15 May 1908, Friday, Vol. 21 - No. 42 Page One Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Irwin and children returned Tuesday from a visit in Denver. Page Two George Heginbotham went to Denver Tuesday. A little daughter arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Nelson on Tuesday May 12. Ad - I will have a special sale on trimmed hats from May 23 to the 30. -- Mrs. J.W. Haver. Misses Nellie Johnson and Mamie Arens left Holyoke Monday for a visit at Lincoln, Nebraska. Carl Shuler has sold to J.L. Slack the Tappan residence property recently purchased by him. Ernest LeBlanc of Bridgeport, Nebraska came down to Holyoke Monday for a visit with his parents. Rev. Winterbourne and M. Anderson came down to Holyoke Tuesday in their automobile, Dave Scott accompanied them. Allie Works has moved his family back to Holyoke from Sterling. He will have charge of the pump at the Burlington round house. E.E.T. Hazen reports the rainfall in this county for the past week as 1.94 inches. The last rain on Wednesday was a fine one and the ground is now well wet down and crops of all kinds are booming. C.B. Jessen of the Haxtun country is in Holyoke today on business. A large number of people of Haxtun and vicinity have been in Holyoke this week in attendance on the district court. Attorneys Judge Allen and J.F. Mail of Denver, H.E. Munson, Simms, George E. McConley and Patterson of Sterling were in attendance on the district court at Holyoke this week. In seven land districts in Colorado, 2,250,000 acres of government land were taken by entry in the year of 1907. There are still 12,000,000 acres of government land in the state but, at the rate it was taken in 1907, it will be but a few years till it will all be taken. Judge Burke convened the May term of district court at Holyoke last Wednesday. A.E. Hart, court reporter and Judge Pound, district attorney are present. In the case of Bennett & Kelsey vs. J.B. Allen action for attorney fee claiming $200, the jury returned a verdict for $60. DIED - At his home near Holyoke on Monday evening, May 11, Henry Hargraves Sr. He had been in failing health for some time, but his death was very sudden and unexpected to his many friends in the country. The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church on Wednesday, Rev. Spence preaching the sermon. Obituary will be published in next issue. On Thursday evening, May 7, C.A. Bryant of Sterling, while on his way from Sterling to Haxtun in his automobile, was killed by the turning over of the automobile. His brother, who was in the automobile with him, escaped injury by jumping. Mr. Bryant had recently purchased a general merchandise store at Haxtun from M. Anderson and was on his way to Haxtun to look after business interests. He also owned a large store in Sterling and stood very high in business circles. He was 34 years of age and leaves a wife and little daughter. W.C. Heller, county commissioner, was in Holyoke Tuesday for the first time in over two months. He has been confined to his home for that length of time with a bad case of inflammatory rheumatism. THE CLOSE OF SCHOOL On last Friday, May 8, Miss Clara V. Donnelly closed a very successful term of school at district No. 81, this being her second term at that place. All the patrons and several friends gathered in, in the afternoon and were highly entertained by a program given by the pupils and phonograph music by L.L. Lane, after which all ate ice cream and cake to their entire satisfaction. We understand that Miss Donnelly will not teach for a time at least, and hope that whatever occupation she may take up in its stead, that success may crown her efforts. We believe we would be safe in saying that all the patrons of the school would unanimously recommend Miss Donnelly as being one among the very best teachers in the state of Colorado. Notice is hereby given that Ordinance No. 49 of the Town of Holyoke, Colorado, requires every person keeping a dog to pay a license therefore and procure a tag and collar and keep the same on the dog’s neck continually. All persons owning any dogs in said Town of Holyoke must comply with this ordinance on or before the first day of June 1908. Dated at Holyoke, Colorado this 11th day of May 1908. -- D.I.
