Canaday Mercantile Co. of Holyoke, returned this week from a visit at Tecumseh, Nebraska. AMHERST The damp weather is now making some our farmers get busy putting in their fall grain. Mrs. Kilburn of Iowa is visiting her son, Walter Kilburn, of Amherst. C.V. DeArmond of Wabaunsee County, Kansas came to Amherst for a short visit with relatives and being so pleased with the country, went home and made arrangements and is here now with his family. Mrs. N. White spent a few days last week in this vicinity before returning home. Mr. Kimmel made a business trip to Illinois last week. Estella Shockey entertained a number of friends last Tuesday evening. All report a pleasant time. S.J. Sawyer, section foreman at Amherst, is spending a few days with friends at Dickens, Nebraska. Rev. John Plath is spending a few days at Amherst. Buying grain at Amherst is a rushing business, with box cars for shoveling houses and main strength elevators. Fred Trumper has completed a new granary and contracted with A.B. Hanway for a house on his farm two miles east of Amherst. Rev. Jenkins, on account of the bad weather, postponed his appointment at Amherst until the 25. R. Slack unloaded two cars of fine young horses at Amherst Saturday. During the past dry weather the candidates have raised quite a dust, and we are grateful for the late rains. The teacher and scholars of District 26 met the Amherst school in a spelling match and ball game. The Amherst pupils won the spelling match and were their equal in the ball game. -- HOMESTEADER Supplement The first literary program at the Trego school house will be given Friday evening, October 30. All cordially invited. Mrs. J.W. Jewell and Mrs. Ralph Millage went to Denver this week to attend the national convention of the W.C.T.U. On Sunday and Monday of this week Phillips County received one of the heaviest falls of rain that the county has ever had in that length of time. E.E.T. Hazen, reporter for the Weather Bureau, reports the rainfall of 4.03 inches. The ground is now in fine condition for the fall grain and much more will be sown. Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Johnson and Mrs. Latta of Haxtun are in Holyoke today. William White from Minnesota is visiting the family of his uncle, Robert White of Holyoke. Floyd Burnett made three round trips from Holyoke to Haxtun with the automobile on the day of the barbecue. Mr. and Mrs. Paul of Cowles, Nebraska who had been visiting their son, C.E. Paul, of Holyoke, left this morning for their home. Charley Pratt of York, Nebraska has been in Holyoke this week looking after business interests. He was one of the early homesteaders of the county and has many friends among the early settlers. Page Five PENNINGTON - KELLY Married at the M.E. parsonage Sunday afternoon, Mr. W. R. Kelly, of Sedgwick and Miss Sylvia Pennington of Holyoke, Rev. G.G. Giller officiating. Miss Pennington is well known in Julesburg, having lived here for a number of months. Mr. Kelly is manager of the Sedgwick meat market. They will make their home in Sedgwick.
