Painter, Editor and Publisher 30 Oct 1908, Friday, Vol. 22 - No. 14 Page Four DIED, on Wednesday, October 28, at the home of his son-in-law, Ernest Hageman, E.D. Ellis of this county. He had been failing in health for some time but his death was quite a surprise to many of his friends who had no idea that his condition was so dangerous. The funeral was held today from the home. He was one of the early settlers of the county and resided on his farm in the northern part of the county except for a short time that he made his home in Holyoke. He had many friends in the county by whom he was highly thought of and who sympathize with the family in their sorrow. Rev. J.T. Jenkins attended the Baptist state convention in Denver this week. Arrangements have been completed to receive the election returns Tuesday evening by wire. C.P. Crowner returned to Holyoke this week after an absence of several months. Mr. and Mrs. William White and Mrs. N. White from Minnesota who had been visiting the family of Robert White of this place left Tuesday for their home. Mr. and Mrs. George Brooks of Oberlin, Kansas came up to Holyoke last week and remained till Tuesday visiting Mrs. Brooks’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert White. AMHERST The ladies aid society met Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. S.A. Rogers. Shipping grain is still an important business at Amherst. Miss Lucy Burns is hauling grain from the farm to Holyoke. How could we get along without our girls? Mr. Lawyer returned from his visit east and is now on duty. Mrs. Burchett has returned from Sterling where she was visiting her brother. Mr. Newman, who owns a farm near Amherst, has gone to Plainview, Nebraska for his family. Victor Fair has rented his father’s farm and is now putting in his fall grain. -- HOMESTEADER STROBLE - PEPPERD At the home of the bride’s parents near Holyoke on Tuesday, October 27, 1908, Rev. G.L. Rulison officiating, John E. Stroble and Miss Jennie E. Pepperd, both of this county, were married. These young people are well and favorably known in this part of the county. The bride came to this county with her parents about a year ago and during her short residence in the county has made many friends. She is a bright, intelligent young lady and is held in high esteem by all who know her. Mr. Stroble has not resided in our county very long but he has gained the respect of a large acquaintance during that time. He is one of our active, enterprising young farmers. They will make their home in our county. The Herald extends best wishes. Ernest LeBlanc of Bridgeport, Nebraska came down this morning for a few days visit with his parents. Mrs. Palmer of Fairmont, Nebraska, who had been visiting her father, L.P. Lewis, and sister, Mrs. G.W. Shuler, left Tuesday for her home. Page Nine Mrs. Sally Irwin left Thursday for a visit at her old home in Illinois. H.C. Clark of this county raised potatoes on his farm that made 160 bushels per acre. At 50 cents per bushel, for which potatoes are selling, that land brought him $80 per acre. How is that for the cheap land of Phillips County? SUMMONS State of Colorado, County of Phillips, County Court James D.
