Capital of Pueblo county. Denver & Rio Grande—Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railways. Daily mails and express. Western Union telegraph line. Daily stages to Cucharas, Trinidad, Santa Fe; tri-weekly to Saguache and Del Norte. Population, 5,500. Vote, September, 1875, total, 257. The Arkansas river furnishes first-class water power; and there are few better localities for woolen mills, foundries and machine shops. The various branches of trade are in the hands of active and energetic business men, who are pushing their enterprises in every direction. The rapid gain in population may be seen from the following: January, 1867, 40: January, 1869, 800; January, 1871, 1,000; January, 1872, 1,500; August, 1872, 2,500; July, 1873, 3,750; January, 1876, 5,500. The opening of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad to this point, and the extension of the Denver and Rio Grande railway to Cucharas and Trinidad, have already given a great impulse to trade and public improvement. Pueblo built last year an irrigating ditch costing $80,000; straightened the channel of the Arkansas river for a distance of two miles; built the Holly system of water-works, at a cost of $120,000; building several substantial business houses and a number of private residences; and the improvement of grounds by the county and a large number of citizens—all of which increased the value of taxable property nearly $800,000. One of the leading banking houses of Colorado, is the People's, of this city. Jno. R. Lowther, Esq., cashier. Mr. Lowther attends to his own business, and does it well. Distances: to Denver, 120 miles; Colorado Springs, 45; Canon City, 45: Las Animas, 93; Fort Lyon, 92; Granada, 140: Fort Garland, 90; Del Norte and La Loma, 110; San Juan mines, 200; Trinidad, 95; Cimarron, New Mexico, 165; Fort Union, New Mexico, 205; Las Vegas, New Mexico, 233; Santa Fe, New Mexico, 308; Silver City, New Mexico, 616; Prescott, Arizona, 710: Tucson, Arizona, 928.
