Hyde (February 17, 1918), Pueblo County, Colorado Transcribed and donated by Dale Christine Hyde Robinson (Great Grand Daughter) April 22, 2007 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++OBITUARY: William H. Hyde, 1918 Source: "Pueblo Chieftain," Pueblo, Colorado Date: February 18, 1918 William H. Hyde Former Mayor of Pueblo is Dead William H. Hyde, a former mayor of the old city of Pueblo, and a resident of Pueblo for fifty-nine years, died at the local hospital yesterday afternoon as a result of an illness of ten days from pneumonia. Mr. Hyde had been identified for more than a half of century with the development of the Pueblo and the Arkansas valley, and during fifty years of that time he was active in the business of life of Pueblo. Four years ago he sold his interests in the Pueblo Carriage company to his partner, John Schultz, and retired his ranch home on the St. Charles Mesa about six miles south-east of the city, and the closing years of his active career were to be spent in the development of his agricultural interests. About ten days ago Mr. Hyde took a heavy cold which settled on his lungs, and he decided to come to the city to receive medical treatment. On the advice of his physicians he went to the hospital for treatment. For a time it seemed that in spite of his four score and two years the rugged pioneer would be able to overcome his illness. But the malady had gained such a hold upon the former sturdy constitution that, in spite of all that medical science could avail, Mr. Hyde strength continued to ebb until mid-afternoon yesterday when the patient dropped quietly into sleep which ended in death shortly thereafter. Mr. Hyde was born in England in 1836 but came to Colorado June 1, 1859 and to Pueblo not long thereafter. Prior to his coming to Pueblo Mr. Hyde had been engaged in work as a mail carrier and express rider in the old days of the west, and for a time after coming to Pueblo he continued that vocation, his duties taking him as far west as California, and subjecting him to the perils of the wild frontier of the early 60's. When the Civil war broke out Mr. Hyde gave up his business to enter the service of his country. His career as a soldier is said to have revealed in him a man of unusual courage, and he was known as a soldier possessed not only of courage, but remarkable tact, born of his many previous years of frontier work when it was necessary to study means of safely conducting parties over the perilous trails of "The Great West that Was," and be possessed of a cool head and a quick wit to overcome the perils of Indians, storms, lost trails, and the countless other dangers which beset the path of those who won the West for civilization. In 1870 Mr. Hyde and Charles Kretschmer formed a business partnership known as Hyde & Kretschmer, and engaged in the implement, wagon and general blacksmithing business. Their place of business was at the corner of Third and Main streets, the present location of the Pueblo Savings and Trust company building. This partnership continued until 1876 when by mutual consent it was dissolved, tho both of these pioneers were, until three years ago when Mr. Hyde retired from business and active city life, engaged in the same lines of business here. Mr. Kretschmer is still active in business here. In 1878 Mr. Hyde was elected mayor of the old city of Pueblo and served with honor. Mr. Hyde was an honored member of the Southern Colorado Pioneers association and of Pueblo Post No. 8, Grand Army of the Republic. He is survived by his widow, a son, Lawrence S. Hyde, and a daughter, Mrs. Guy Russell of Los Angeles, Cal. A son Edward Hyde, and a daughter, Lulu, preceded their father to the grave. A brother of the deceased died about a year ago at his home in Canon City. The remains were removed to the McCarthy chapel where they are held pending the arrival of relatives and completion of the arrangements for the funeral, the time and place of the services to be announced later.
