Reid rreid21@cox.net July 3, 2008, 10:24 pm Cripple Creek (Morning Times) December 31, 1895 She was the Pet of the Police and Fire Departments. Poor "Trilby" is dead. Her demise occurred yesterday afternoon and a cruel bullet fired by the city timekeeper was the direct cause of death. "Trilby" was a small Scotch terrier and was the pet of the police and fire departments. Two years ago she limped up to the city jail, looked longingly within, walked up to a policeman and held a broken paw appealingly in front of him. Upon examination it was conlcuded that the paw had been run over by a wagon and badly crushed. The kind-hearted policeman dressed the wounded member and made a box in which the dog was placed for the night. The wound soon healed, but "Trilby" was so satisfied that she didn't care to leave her comfortable quarters, and as no one objected she remained and became the pet of the police and fire departments of the city. She would visit the different beats at night and walk for an hour with the blue coats who were so kind to her. She attended all fires and was usually the first to be on deck when the alarm was sounded. Yesterday afternoon, as she was skipping along with the city timekeeper a team of horses came dashing down the street. "Trilby" saw them coming and in making an effort to get out of their way fell and the heavy wheels passed over her. She was carried as tenderly as a babe to the fire station but her back was broken, and the only thing that was to be done was to put her out of her misery. One of the boys got a big revolver, aimed it at the poor dog, shut his eyes, pulled the trigger, and with a quiver "Trilby" was dead. They buried her on a vacant lot in the rear of the jail and erected a head stone which bears the simple inscription "Trilby."
