Family research as of 2012
Sarah (Sadie) Ellen Carothers was born November 30, 1875 at Kimbolton, 
Guernsey, Ohio to George Patterson Carothers and Emma Ingram. Sadie was the 
oldest of eleven children. Her siblings were: John Hamilton, James Dale, 
Rosella Jane, William Garfield, Etta Martha, Elizabeth Miller, Mary Josephine, 
Minnie Agnes, Margaret Alys and Albert George. 

Found Sadie in the 1880 census living at Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio with her 
parents: George P. Carothers 29, Emma Carothers 23, Sarah E. Carothers 4, John 
H. Carothers 3, James D. Carothers 1, Rocilla (Rosella) J. Carothers 3m.  

In the spring of 1888, the family moved west to Garner, Hancock, Iowa to farm. 

Found in the 1895 and 1900 censuses at Concord, Hancock, IA: 
1895: Sarah Ellen Carothers age 19. 

1900: Emma Carothers 43, Sadie E Carothers 24, Jennie R Carothers 20, William G 
Carothers 18, Lizzie M Carothers 14, Josephine M Carothers 12, Minnie A 
Carothers 10, Margaret A Carothers 7. (her father, George Patterson Carothers, 
had died March 6, 1900).

Sadie married Thomas Fotheringham about January 27, 1897 at Garner, Hancock, 
Iowa. Thomas had been married before and had a son. The family moved to 
Colorado. 
(Thomas Fotheringham born June 8, 1859 Palmerston, Perth, Ontario, Canada, died 
August 2, 1917 Briggsdale, Weld, Colorado). 

Found Sadie in the 1910 census at Willow Creek, Weld, Colorado with spouse 
Thomas Fotheringham and stepson, age 17: Thomas Fatheringham 49, Ladd (Sadie) 
Fatheringham 34, Wattie Fatheringham 17.

Found in the 1920 census at Briggsdale, Weld, Colorado with her mother, Emma 
Ingram. Sadie is widowed. Her stepson lives next door: S (Sadie) C. 
Fotheringham 44, Emma Carathers 63.

Sadie married Clarence Burton Groesbeck on August 1921 at Greeley, Weld, 
Colorado. 
(Clarence Burton Groesbeck born April 16, 1866 at Prairie City, Jasper, Iowa, 
married first in 1889 to Mary Elizabeth Weeks (Mary died 1920); 3 children: 
Hazel, Clarence and Glenwood, Clarence died May 21, 1954)

Found in the 1930 census at Briggsdale, Weld, Colorado: Clarence B Groesbeck 
64, Sadie C Groesbeck 54. 

Obituary from Greeley Daily Tribune, February 12, 1971: 
"Mrs Sadie Groesbeck, formerly of the Pierce and Briggsdale areas, died 
Thursday morning at the Kenton Nursing home. She was 95 years old. 

Sarah (Sadie) Groesbeck was born in Guernsey, Ohio November 30, 1875 and with 
her husband, homesteaded at Briggsdale on a desert claim for 20 years. They 
moved to Pierce in 1945 and to Greeley in 1961. 

She is survived by two step-sons, Glen Groesbeck of Ft. Smith, Arkansas and 
Clarence Groesbeck of Garner, Iowa; several grandchildren and great-
grandchildren. Also 3 sisters: Mrs Margaret Lade and Mrs Jennie Badker of 
Garner, IA and Mrs Minnie Young of Edmonds, Washington. 

Mrs. Groesbeck was an aunt of the Reverand Harold Maley of Greeley and mother-
in-law of A.W. Barnes of Boulder, Co.

Sadie died February 11, 1971 at Greeley, Weld, Colorado. She is buried at the 
Green Mountain Cemetery, Boulder, Colorado.
