The first child of Nanne and Gretcha Boden. Approximately a year later the little family set sail for the United States. The ocean voyage lasted more than two weeks and terminated in Baltimore, Maryland. From there they made their way by train and freight wagon to an area about twelve miles north of Goodland, Kansas where Nanne had a brother, Wils. They stayed in this location for about 3 years during which time they acquired U. S. citizenship. At the end of this period they moved to Yuma County, where Nanne established a homestead near the South Fork of the Republican River. Edward was educated in the Newton School, as were most of the children of his family. When he achieved his majority he homesteaded the NW1/4 of Section 20, Township 5 South, Range 44 West. On February 10, 1916 Edward married Harriet Dena Jackson, who lived on her parents farm to the northeast of Ed's land. To this union one child, Evelyn Marie was born on October 9, 1917. Ed and Dena continued to work the farmstead and to expand it. Additonal land was acquired by purchase and a home and other outbuildings were constructed on the edge of the South Fork valley. At that time a school existed about 1/2 mile east of the Boden home and it came to be known as the "Boden School". For many years most of the teachers of the school found board and room at Ed and Dena's home. Ed raised wheat, corn and milo as well as cattle and hogs. He distinctly remembers how his cattle herd was thinned out by the disastrous flood of the Republican River on May 30, 1935. The water level at the time came up to the yard line in front of the house but spared the buildings. In 1945 Ed and Dena elected to give up farming and moved to Burlington, Colorado, to spend their remaining days. The farm was sold to Chester Davis, who still farms it. Dena passed away in 1974. Ed now resides at Grace Manor Nursing Home in Burlington and celebrated his 90th birthday on September 9, 1977.
