He was 85 years, 7 months and 17 days old at the time of his death. Mr. Heindel was born July 14, 1870 at Galesburg, Illinois, a son of John and Hedwig (Kinkle) Heindel, Bavarian immigrants to the United States. He grew up in Canan township, Henry County, Iowa, and when he was 17 came to what was then Weld County and now is Yuma County, Colorado. He helped on the homestead and lived at home until he was 25, then on January 23, 1845, he was married to Sophie Renzelman and to them eight children were born. He homesteaded, then became a builder and contractor. He built most of the older buildings in Wray, including many of the buildings on Wray's Main Street, many homes, churches and other public buildings. His last contracting job was the first Yuma High School building that is now the Masonic Hall in Wray. In 1912 he made a partnership with the late Ed Robinson and entered the automobile business. In 1917 he sold his interest in the business but kept the building, then left on an automobile tour of the west coast. In 1918 he returned to Wray and with the late Harvey Speicher purchased the automobile business again. The business later became William Heindel and Son and is now operated as the Heindel Motor Company with one of his sons, T. A. Heindel as the owner. In 1922 Mr. Heindel was named as county road supervisor by the county commissioners of Yuma County. He held this job until he retired in 1945 at the age of 75 years. Under his supervision nearly all of the county road system was laid out, elevated and surfaced. He was considered one of the outstanding road builders of the state. Mrs. Heindel preceded him in death on November 22, 1949. Surviving are his eight children; W. H. Heindel of Casper, Wyoming, C. F. Heindel of Dufur, Oregon, E. T. Heindel of Whittier, California, Marie Keenan of Denver, T. A. Heindel of Wray, Bertha Brownlee of Wray, Kathryn Shroyer of Greeley and R. K. Heindel of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, John Heindel of Idaho Falls, Idaho and Tom Heindel of Shell Beach, California; 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Calvary Lutheran Church of which he was a member, Sunday afternoon with the Rev. M. H. Elmshauser officiating and burial was at the Grandview Cemetery.
