He passed away Thursday, October 21, 1993, at the Veterans Hospital in Denver at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 3 days. Alfred served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Therater. After he returned from overseas he lived in Denver. Alfred was united in marriage to Olive F. Gurnsey on October 20, 1946. To this union they had four children, Leon Sr., Diana, Chuck and Larry. They were also foster parents to Barbara McCloud Smith and Robert McCloud for four years. Alfred and Olive then moved to Eckley and Alfred worked for Charlie Fasterbend. They then moved to Nebraska and Alfred worked for Johnny Hippen farming. They moved back to Eckley and he went to work for the Yuma County Highway Department for 11 years. He then bought Charlie Fasterbend's Pump Service where he and his sons worked on wells. They then bought a drilling rig and they ran it until his illness occurred in 1978 and he had to retire. He served on the Eckley Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years. He also served as chief for seven years. After his retirement from the fire department he served as Grand Marshall for several years. He was recognized with an appreciation plaque for services and dedication to the town of Eckley in 1991. Alfred enjoyed hi grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed talking with his friends and neighbors and fishing and boating. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Mattie Spelts; wife, Olive; brothers, JOhn, George, Felix, Ernest, Chester and Sidney; sisters, Nettie, Jenny, Hazel, Zella, Doris and Myrtle; and son, Leon Spelts. He is survived by one daughter, Diana McMurphy and Husband, Harold of Denver; sons, Chuck and wife, Lois of Eckley and Larry and wife, Rachel of Denver; daughter-in-law, Linda Spelts of Laird; foster children, Barbara Smith of Yuma and Robert McCloud of Wray; sister, Alice Turvy of Eckley; 13 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Funeral service was held Monday, October 25, 1993 at the New Life Fellowship Church with Rev. Brian Severin officiating. Interment was made in the Eckley Cemetery.
