It was started by the Andrew Lucas family when the nearby Friend Cemetery closed and in 1901 was donated to the community with a stipulation in the deed that burial plots would be given for free to anyone who asked. It is still active and is maintained by the East Yuma County Cemetery District. Many, if not all, of the 1880s-1890s burials here are remains of those moved from the Friend Cemetery.
