Scofield, died in Memphis, Tenn., May 17, 1863, aged twenty-two years and three months. He had wished to enter the service while at home, but was dissuaded from doing so because of his physical inability. On a visit to his relations in Illinois, he could not resist the call made upon him, and entered the 74th Ill. regiment. He was for meritorious conduct, made orderly sergeant. He was a noble young man, and a courageous soldier. He was offered a discharge on account of his health, but refused to accept it. He continued to exhibit a model of fidelity in all the routine of a soldier's duty, until attacked by pneumonia, which proved suddenly fatal. A memorial service was held in his honor at the Congregational church of his native town, June 14, 1863.
