Abbate Sr., 77, of Ash Drive, Windsor Locks, beloved husband of Ledia (Cornelio) Abbate, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Hartford Hospital. Sal was born in New York of the late Joseph and Margaret (Ambruso) Abbate and had lived in Hartford before moving to Windsor Locks. He served in the Army during World War II, serving in the 486th Battalion, 3rd Armor Division in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Andennes, and Central Europe. He owned and operated Sal Abbate Plumbing & Heating Co. from 1958 until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of VFW Post 254-Hartford and was known as the Mayor of Ash Drive. Besides Ledia, his wife of 48 years, Sal is survived by a daughter, Maria Curto and her husband, Michael, of Windsor Locks; his grandsons, Joseph Ribaudo of Windsor Locks and Salvatore A. Abbate III of Windsor; three stepgrandchildren, Michael, Marc, and Vincent Curto of Agawam, Mass.; his mother-in-law, Concettina Cornelio of Windsor Locks; his sister, Rose Piwarcyk and her husband, Peter, of East Hartford; his brothers, Daniel Abbate and his wife, Ruth, of Wethersfield, Andrew Abbate and his wife, Marie of Hartford, and John Abbate and his wife, Alice of Newington; his sister-in-law, Grace Abbate of Wethersfield, and a brother-in-law, Steve Scolsky of West Hartford. His son, Salvatore A. Abbate Jr., died in 1984. He is also predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Rocco Abbate, and a sister, Millie Scolsky. Relatives and friends are invited to gather Monday at 9:15 a.m. at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks, for a procession to the St. Mary Church in Windsor Locks where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. His family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
